Replace gutter sealant in Bedford
Hi all,
I have a leak in the 'roof' of my passenger door, I think it is getting in through the sealant in the roof gutter which needs removing and replacing as its looking tired. Sikaflex?
How do I do it? Guessing it's along the lines of:
Remove old mastic type stuff
Clear dirt with cleaner (house hold stuff?) and wire brush?
Leave to dry
Put new sealant on?
Any info would be really useful.
Many thanks
Claire

Hi Claire.
Been lurking around your post hoping for some tips myself. This must be a common problem so I expected loads of replies but this appears not to be the case. I’ve got a similar(ish) problem on the old Duetto. There is a black plastic trim between the fibreglass roof and the body of the vehicle (see any aging Duetto photo). Anyway it’s filled with some sort of mastic as a water seal. On mine I found a small section at the back on the driver’s side where there was a split in the mastic allowing water through (promoting the old tin worm).
I agree with your thoughts as to how to fix it but the main problem seems to be “how do you remove the old mastic”
As a temporary measure I sealed the split with Thompson’s roof and gutter sealant, obtained from the roofing section of the local B&Q. This is basically a black gunge that sticks to just about anything . Thing is it never dries – just sets like a sort of chewing gum. I say a temporary measure but this was done a year or so ago and so far no leaks.
Look in the roofing section - it’s not with the silicon sealants.
I used a paint brush to force it into the split and then covered it with a second layer using a wet finger to smooth it. Washing it off the finger was a nightmare but that’s good news because it means it won’t wash of easily in the rain.
I spoke to a friend of mine who repairs double glazing for a living and he told me that there is some magic stuff the trade use to remove all types of mastic. He promised to give me some when he has a bit left over (I’ll check that it doesn’t remove paint as well). I’ll post the details if and when he comes up with the goods.

Hi PB
Brilliant .
Thanks for the info. Hopefully Clare is looking also. I bet it’s the same stuff my friend is talking about. If he doesn’t come up with the goods I’ll get hold of some.
The B&Q stuff works well but I’d like to get it fixed properly.
