Sheffield Clean Air Zone
Last night I was on the CMC site at Chatsworth and today I had to travel to North Yorkshire. I put it in the satnav and it produced a quite logical route via Sheffield on to the M19, M1 and A1M
A few miles outside Sheffield I saw to my surprise the it has a clean air zone but I carried on assuming (will I never learn) that following the main motorway signs up north I would skirt it. How wrong could I be. I came to a large roundabout with three exits…all major roads. Each one had a sign warning that you are entering a clean air zone. I was therefore in the situation of having no option other that to carry on my route and pay it. I am talking of main routes not town centre roads.
It’s not the £10 which is an irritant, but more the unfairness of being forced to pay to go through the zone as there was simply no option.
Anyway I did have some idea of paying a visit to Sheffield for one of the industrial museum in the future. Not now! In fact for any reason.

I make a point of never visiting anywhere with any LEZ. Sometimes I explain this to the affected council, not yet had a reply so conclusion... they either can't read or can't write!!!

Daughter's Yaris is diesel, registered Jan 2014, CO2 is 99g, so zero road tax, but not allowed in any Scottish LEZ but newer SUVswith far higher environmental impact allowed in. Seems perverse, but just won't visit city centres in future

The problem is that business rates go to central government, not the local council who simply collect and pass them on.
So the councils themselves don't care about businesses losing money or closing.
As shown by the constant hikes in High Street car park charges, which drives customers to the out of town shopping malls with free parking.

Same as Bilbo
Had, now sold a E6 Skoda Yeti 2.0 diesel, auto, 4x4, but E6, Ad blue other assorted Greeniot cr8p....144g/Km
Now have Volvo V50, E5, 1.6 diesel, manual, but E5 Emissions 99g/Km so zero road tax.
Therefore, IMHO a much less polluting vehicle.
Skoda ULEZ and LEZ compliant, Volvo not........
I wonder if some of those responsible for this could even spell emissions......
On another note, saw a brand new Nissan Leaf the other day...ZERO EMISISSIONS on boot badge...that should be disallowed as a complete lie, trade descriptions, advertising standards etc, total nonsense, no EV is zero emissions....(Don't get me started!!)

Re: Sheffield Clean Air Zone
These are just money grabbing schemes by local councils, usually ineffective since drivers are often forced to travel even more miles to avoid the charge areas, so polluting more.
The results from Oxford already show this type of zone simply moves the problem elsewhere:
https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/23591766.oxford-pollution-new-report-reveals-legal-limit-breached/
Politicians yet again failing to think things through, demonstrating their complete lack of understanding of the law of unintended consequences.

There are 651 MP's in the Houses of Parliament.
Read recently that only 29 have a degree in either engineering or science....
So, by my simplistic maths we have 651- 29 = 622 of less than zero use!!!
I think I am correct!

Well Ian, this Wizard Wheeze might just knock your socks off. Reported today, English councils are expected to roll out higher parking charges for "polluting" cars (no, it's not the 1st April). The most "polluting" will pay double to park in council run carparks. Lambeth has already adopted the system,

Yes Tony, they're at it again
Two things, mine is tax exempt, so low pollution, less than an EV imho(!).
Secondly we never pay to park
Finally the chances of finding me anywhere near Lambeth are considerably less than zero!!!
Wonder when these, clearly idiotic people will realise they'll have to do load tests on the multi storey car parks as the EVs are circa 30% heavier than proper cars!!!

We had a few days at the CAMC Burrs Country Park site close to Bury. Bury is in the Greater Manchester LEZ and the CAMC directions take you close to Bury centre. I hadn't given it any thought beforehand but according to a couple of knowledgeable locals the zone is not yet in operation.

Re: Sheffield Clean Air Zone
As has been said already we refuse to go anywhere with."fake green credentials" and increasingly due to the travelling community height restrictions on park and ride schemes, Coventry was one such place but yet we could pay to park in the city centre bus station. Nottingham was the same the only p and r site we could use was at Hinckley!

Sheffield clean air zone
I had the exact same experience in Sheffield 10 days ago. However, while i was driving my wife went on line, put in our reg number and it came back to say that no fee is payable, as charges are only currently being made for lorries.
Provides some respite but a warning for all about what is coming down the line

I have just checked my 2012 Broadway for all the clean air zones and they all come up no charge, makes me nervous to chance it!

From Chatsworth or Castleton go to Chesterfield then junction 29 on the M1. Unless you don't like motorways without a hard shoulder of course . I hate them.Bobskate wrote:Last night I was on the CMC site at Chatsworth and today I had to travel to North Yorkshire. Re: Sheffield Clean Air Zone
Recently sitting in Baltic warf CAMC site in Bristol sited within the zone, breathing in diesel fumes with no catalytic converter fitted from the machinery running outside the site, then looking at the boats running about, some two strokes, some 4 stroke petrol and some obviously old (50’s & 60’s) diesel engines. Not to mention the steam crane that operates on some days, and the 1950’s lorry that was driven onto the quay side, it didn’t really seem fair to call it a ULEZ zone. The old Skool diesel fumes smelt great by the way.

On the way to drop our son at Manchester Airport on Monday I noticed the sign for the M60 said proposed clean air zone. It seems to have been like that for a while now. When will they decide??? .

Interesting things happening re all inside M25 ULEZ right now......
Not that it'll affect me, I'd need a huge hourly rate to go anywhere near the place these days......
