Faded Black plastic
Evening All,
Please see photo, I would like to reinstate the black rather than the faded black…
Read on here to use boot polish, but doesn’t seem to want to play the game. Any other tips/suggestions please?
Cheers
Bill

Boiled linseed oil and white spirit 50-50. Just redone mine after five years. Put it on with a lint free cloth, leave it half an hour and wipe off the excess with another lint free cloth. Takes about half an hour.

Sorry the liquid shoe polish doesn't work for some people. I got the tip off another forum where lots of people recommended it and it worked very well for me.

I've used that and found it didn't last more than a couple of months.v8oholic wrote:Autoglym Bumper & Trim Gel works like magic on plastic and rubber.

It works really well for me, once a year is enough.

Some trims are more rubbery than plastic, I wonder if some trim is better suited to some products than others. Find one you're happy with and stick to it.

I'm in the Jarjar camp - boiled linseed oil. Done mine a couple of months ago and it worked a treat.

I agree! I use boiled linseed oil on mine. Works great. I posted a few pics here:Dave Gee wrote:I'm in the Jarjar camp - boiled linseed oil. Done mine a couple of months ago and it worked a treat.

Just finished my van with autoglym B&T , usually have to repeat the application again in a few months, really depends on how dis coloured the black trim is, mine was bad from a really nasty wet winter, looks a treat now.

It’s a 50 / 50 mix and it goes a long way , our hardware sells 250ml bottles of boiled linseed so you should be able to get similar

Re: Faded Black plastic
I’ve just done mine with 50ml of each, and had enough left over to do my mini. The important things are not to get any on the paintwork, or rub it off straight away - and wipe the excess off after twenty minutes or so. If you leave it you get a sticky residue on the paintwork or on the trim itself, and it attracts insects!

Re: Faded Black plastic
Had a few hours to kill this morning so I mixed up a 50/50 boiled linseed and white spirit mix , I gave all the plastics a real good clean with a hard bristle scrubbing brush and a strong mixture of APC ( all purpose cleaner, washing up liquid and a strong floor cleaner mixed with warm water ) I gave it a real good scrub and rinsed of with the hose, left to dry and then applied with the yellow sponge polish pads I use, apply sparingly and really rub into the slight grain, after 15 minutes I buffed of with an old cotton sheet torn into squares, I am pleased with the initial results just hope it last longer than the Autoglym stuff.

A before and after on the linseed 50/50 mix and after a few days rain, no streaks at all

Re: Faded Black plastic
I first applied the boiled linseed mix on the 8th of May, the van has been washed 3 times and rained on ,today after a clean the trim is still holding up well to the effects of cleaning and the weather , I am very pleased and will continue to use the mixture, better than some of the pricey car cleaning brands

Re: Faded Black plastic
I have been using Autoglym bumper and trim gel, but after rain streaks appear immediately. So, took up the suggestion of boiled linsead oil/white spirit mix and hey presto! Takes a few hours to dry so probably best if it is not going to rain for a while. Had plenty of rain since applying and still looking perfect.
Thanks to the people for the suggestion on this forum.
