Tempted to upgrade our factory fitted radio in our Nuevo (Boxer X250) mainly for iPod playback, have found this Sony DSX-S100 unit which has a tray that you insert your iPod into so it's housed with the head unit out of sight and protected which seems quite nifty...

My biggest concern is the loss of the steering wheel controls? How do you rectify this in order for the controls to pair up and work correctly? I read of a steering wheel stalk adapter elsewhere but would Halfords or an Audio outlet have what I need or is it more complicated than that? If anyone has fitted a new unit how did you get the wheel controls working?

Thanks for that dandy up!

Not knowing much about this I presume I need the CTSPG010 Stalk Control Adaptor, so it's just a case of obtaining one of these for the installation then?

I'd assume so - probably best to ask your local car audio dealer - even Halfrauds might be helpful....................

Upgrading Radio Head Unit in Boxer X250 Empty Re: Upgrading Radio Head Unit in Boxer X250

Post by moggyminor1966 Fri Aug 03, 2012 10:08 pm

Hi CC there is quite a lot of info on a post previously with a lot of input from me. I have fitted a Kenwood KIV 700 unit with full iPod control. This is an exceptional unit giving excellent sound quality with the existing speakers. Having tried 3 different leads before I found one to fully work with the steering controls you need an Autoleads PC99-X29 lead together with the appropriate patch lead for your head unit. The unit will power on independent of the ignition and does fully power down when switched off without any battery drain. You will need a set of keys available on eBay to extract the Peugeot unit and as this is a non standard size you will need an adapter facia. I used the Connects2 one which is a good match to the existing trim. You just need to hacksaw off 2 plastic lugs either side which you wil see when you take the radio out.
I have still got the Connects2 lead mentioned in the post but it did not function correctly for me.
If you are going to Malvern show then I would be happy to show you my unit. The Sony unit does look good but I have been more than satisfied with the Kenwood unit. All the control leads come out of the rear of the unit and I fed these easily into the big glove box below the dash as there is a square hole at the back of the glovebox and the iPod just sits in the glovebox. It also has a USB lead for software upgrades or you can connect a portable harddrive.
If you want any more info then just pm me CC. smile! smile!

PS Just found the original topic with photo of my unit

Hi Moggy

The Sony unit is quite a cheap unit for what it is, under £130 which is about as much as I'd really want to pay.. was thinking of getting it through Halfords and getting them to fit it (if they are competent and skilled enough) wont use my local store but the main superstore in Norwich, otherwise I was going to take it to an audio specialist but just trying to find out what bits I need in case they are unable to supply these? The reviews for the Sony unit are pretty positive and the price is on the button (enough to be tempted anyway) smile!

Will the Autoleads PC99-X29 lead also be compatible with the Sony unit? With regards the appropriate patch lead for the head unit can Halfords or another audio shop or fitter supply these at the time of fitting?

Hi CC I see Amazon are selling the unit at £84.80 so quite a bargain. The Autoleads lead should work fine and Halfords should have the Sony patch lead. Quite honestly it is not that difficult to fit but I have fitted many in the past.

In case you do decide to do it yourself this is what you will need. smile! smile!

1. Radio removal tools.

2. Autoleads steering wheel interface PC99-X29

This listing includes a free patch lead- just add a note that you require the Sony lead. (PC99-SON)

3. Connects2 Facia adapter CT24PE07

4. Fakra to DIn aerial adapter

Hope this helps and anyone else who may be tempted to change their head unit. One thing to bear in mind is that French manufacturers are the only ones who do not stick to the ISO wiring standard! confused3

Thanks Moggy... caved in to temptation and ordered!! Whistle1

Went into my local Halfords this morning and they didn't have the unit in stock but said to the guy "I suspect I have to buy the unit here in order to get it fitted" he replied no we can still fit it if you buy it elsewhere, so may have a go at fitting myself otherwise get him to do it as he seemed to know his stuff and was very helpful and friendly.

Ordered the head unit from Amazon instead of the preferred partner as I find the returns is simple if dealing with them direct, also ordered the Autoleads pc99-x29 & Autoleads pc99-SON all at a total cost of £121.64 so really appreciate you linking to Amazon as it's saved me a good bit of money.. the Autoleads pc99-x29 is a fiver in halfords and they wanted sixty quid for Autoleads pc99-SON so saved quite a bit of money look here

Just need to get the FAKRA DIN RADIO AERIAL ADAPTOR and Facia Adaptor (although I might get the one Dolwen used) Only other problem is to try and find out what has happened to our rear speaker (hab door side) as it hasn't worked since Auto-Sleepers fitted the mini Heki which is rather worrying, wonder if when removing the old light they have broke the connection or cut through the wire shrugg was fine up till that point...

Hi CC glad you have got things sorted let me know if you get stuck.
I would be inclined to get Autosleepers to fix your speaker as they have obviously damaged the wiring when they fitted your mini Heki. Have had a look at the speakers and not too sure how you can remove the speaker grill to gain access to check the wires. Perhaps someone else may know? confused3

There's a JASO - ISO adapter supplied with the radio - does the Pug need more than this?

The original aerial lead is terminated with a Fakra connector so a Fakra to Din adapter is required.

Upgrading Radio Head Unit in Boxer X250 2lvo03

Just to clarify I got my prices round the wrong way in my earlier posting, the prices at halfords for the Autoleads pc99-SON was a fiver and they wanted sixty quid for the Autoleads pc99-x29 (not other way round as I posted earlier) :0_blush: But as posted got them much cheaper through Amazon

Hi Moggy...

Spoke to Mark at Auto-Sleepers and he said as the speaker wire is in a channel of it's own it wouldn't be possible for the fitter to have damaged it, he told me the grills just prise off then the speaker can be unscrewed so will investigate this further at the weekend.

Have received all my gear now.. (apart from a remote control on it's way) I have a query about the FAKRA DIN RADIO AERIAL ADAPTOR which came today, it's slightly different to the lead in the listing.. all black and the quality doesn't look as good, was yours the same or different?

Also I'm not sure when fitting the head unit whether to use the upper recess or the lower one, my concern is that reviews have stated that the display is quite bright and cant be adjusted and have been thinking that the top bay might make it a little distracting while night driving, also wondering about availability of space for the wiring & connectors at the rear and if there is adequate space for this to fit or if it works better one way or the other?

Was also wondering about fitting one of these to solve the problem of no cup holders in the X250 but can't make my mind up if it will just look tacky or not shrugg

I read you can adjust the brightness and the orange wire goes to the headlight circuit to dim the display when the lamps are on.

Hi CC
I tried to find the Fakra adapter I got off eBay but as it was awhile ago it is no longer shown in my bought items. it did not have a cable and was as far as I can remember a din plug with a Fakra adapter at the end of it.
As far as the position of the radio is concerned it does not really matter but I just prefer it in the top and find the open slot below it handy for glasses, mobile phone etc. Not seen the cup holder thing before but just a matter of choice. If it is not to expensive then you could try it out. One thing to bear in mind however is that once you push the cubby hole bit in I do not see how you can remove it without difficulty. You are best leaving it out until you have trial tested all the connections to the radio to make sure it all works with the steering controls. There is plenty of room for the cables behind.
Good luck with fitting and let me know if you have any problems. smile! smile!

Just found this which is similar to what I used.

Hi Moggy....

Finally got the headunit in, happy with the unit and the iPod function works a treat.... very handy having the Sony remote which I obtained separately in the photo so we can operate the radio from the lounge area or when in bed as well as switching off without having to lean into the front.

I'm just curious about the Connects2 CT24FT10 Fascia Panel... it fits nicely at the bottom but the top is slightly proud (think you can see this in photo?) the locking tabs at the top and bottom of the fascia also don't quite lock in behind the dash cut out even with a good shove... having looked at the top edge of the fascia (from above looking down) there is a slight curve in the patterned part of the dash whereas the fascia is straight? So wondering if I tried to shape the top edge to get a better fit then maybe it will look nicer but also the locking tabs will click in behind the dash as I suspect they are supposed to... did yours click in and secure out of interest? Otherwise very happy and the steering controls all work... BTW didn't need the Fakra aerial adapter just used the adapter supplied with the head unit.

Hi CC looks good. Lucky you got an aerial adapter with yours, there wasn't one in my Kenwood. My remote was included however but switching it off from the remote only puts it into standby but it is handy for turning volume up and down and selecting tracks on the iPod. I prefer to press the power button on the fascia which completely powers the unit down so I get no battery drain.
On my Nuevo it has the wood effect stuff on the dashboard fitted by A/S so this does prevent the top of the fascia adapter going in completely but I did manage to get all the locking tabs to push in by pressing hard. Glad you got it sorted and anything is better than the original which I managed to sell on eBay. smile!

If you hold the remote "OFF" button down for about 3 seconds then the whole plot shuts down - at least it does on my old Sony with a very similar remote.
