Have a few on my 2016 WXL rail , a little wire wool and wd40 removes it, it’s more of a tarnish than rust

Good grade stainless Steel does not rust. Think of your kitchen pots and pans.

Hi,the forming tools used to make these components are basic tool steels and very often leave a mild steel smear on the stainless steel parts which rusts.Normally removed with a metal polish or a pan shiner. You very often see the same effect on the stainless steel sinks.Good luck cleaning it off,Tony.

Re: Rust spots 2021 door track
I left a paintbrush on our stainless steel sink and it left a rusty mark.
I wouldn't use wire wool, any bits left will go rusty and may trigger more rust spots.
I'd try painting some neat Domestos on the rust spots and leave it for an hour or so. I use Domestos in our teapot and sink drainer to remove the stains from tea.Whilst this is happening we use a spare teapot, mostly I have to leave the Domestos in the teapot overnight.
There are different qualities of stainless steel, marine grade is one of the better ones.
When you've got rid of the rust, a coat of wax polish might be a good idea.

Scotchbrite like the green on sink sponges, a little less harsh. Then chrome cleaner.

Austenitic grade 304 is best. Its non magnetic and has high chromium content.
Check with a magnet. Then just clean often.
Many cheap grade SS on the market.

316 grade is better, used in marine ware.
Stainless steel pan scourers are best for cleaning SS things, same hardness so won't scratch polished surfaces.

I’ve got them, they are rust marks left from bits of swarf when the drilled and cut holes in the van at Autosleeper. Nothing to worry about.

I mistakenly cleaned some stainless steel parts with a Chlorine bleach solution and it rusted overnight!

Yes it does appear that chorine containing bleach attacks some of the constituent element that go to make stainless steel stainless. The extent of the effects seems to depend on the grade of the stainless steel and the frequency of exposure. Here I've seen no evidence of adverse effects when used to occasionally clean our teapot and sink from the stains left by tea.

I wonder now if a better alternative would be a phosphoric acid based product such as PQR Metal Prep, or Jenolite Rust Remover.

I go along with the idea that the rust spots had probably been caused by metal swarf, so once cleaned off this shouldn't be a recurring problem.
