Broken tap
Hi, we have just bought a 1992 T4 trooper and when I noticed water dripping from the fresh water tank I tried the tap only for the handle to break of in my fingers, are the my replaceable or is it a new tank and are they readily available, Thanks.

Re: Broken tap
Great, are they easy to fit, it seems like there is sealant where the tap attaches to the tank?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Broken tap
You might find a nut for the tap is inside the tank, l was lucky, mine was attached to the tank so it did not fall away, screwed the new one in with added sealant

So what happens then, is it a new tank job?

Re: Broken tap
Thanks Roger, my only concern is getting the old one out, it just breaks as soon as you touch it.

Re: Broken tap
trying to remember what others have done, cut the tap bit off, insert 2 hooked wires through to stop the nut falling into the tank, remove old part of tap, smear sealant or similar on the inside of tank to stick the nut to by pulling the nut onto it, when dry attach the new tap very gently with sealant all around. I have to stress, I have never done this, but it maybe a fix without dropping the tank?

Re: Broken tap
Update, mine must have a nut behind it in the tank, because it just span when I undid it a bit and broke the seal. I didnt fancy dropping the tanks and creating more work, so i did what the previous owner had done to the other tap, drilled a hole through the top 90 degrees to the snapped handle and put a bolt through as a lever using 2 nuts to space it away from the tap, seems to have worked fine for now!

Re: Broken tap
But if you've broken the seal chances are it will leak.

Re: Broken tap
True, but I resealed it with black silicone fingers crossed but yeah its looser now so it may well leak. What a silly design you have to drop the tank and somehow get your hand inside to hold the nut!

So the bolt is for opening and closing the tap now?mylesbarn wrote:Update, mine must have a nut behind it in the tank, because it just span when I undid it a bit and broke the seal. Re: Broken tap
Yeah, I wish I'd just done that before trying to loosen it, like a say the previous owner had done the same thing on the other tank tap. I think the tap will still seal since its a cylinder inside a cylinder with a hole in the inner cylinder to let the water flow so I assume drilling a hole in the top part of it will be okay. Also another slight benefit is the bolt has 2 areas (back and front) to push on the inner cylinder to open and close it, rather than the originally just having the handle being 1 point of connection and therefore being weaker (but I have drilled a hole though it so its probably weakened it too, so we'll see).

I just can't picture where you mean you drilled, it but I need to have another look at mine to weigh the job up.
Thanks

Re: Broken tap
Maybe a fix, go for a copper tank connector, make a flat bracket with 2 holes to take bolt or self tapper drill a hole the same size as the flange and solder both together, you can then seal when you fit and Self tap the bracket to the tank, to hold it then use a straight though tap isolator
Or possibly fix the nut to the outside of the tank and then seal, just a thought

Re: Broken tap
When my tap was leaking I took the tank off, once off it was easy to get my hand in through the top and tighten the nut, I used a little thread lock on the thread and bed of silicone around the aperture.
Tank is held in place with two lengths of angle iron, sheet of plywood supported by four “J”/ gutter bolts. I ordered four new bolts, supported the tank with a trolly jack, cut two wires that connect the level sender, cut the old j bolts, lowered tank down, re stained the plywood, wire brushed and painted the angle iron. There are four sections of wood batten that sit between the upper side of the tank and the van floor, two of mine were loose, so once everything cleaned, re glued the wood battens, tank on plywood lift with jack, re attach angle iron supports with new j bolts, solder two wires for level sender, also cleaned and painted the floor section that the tank hides before replacing the tank, bit fiddly but worth doing. As two sections of the wood battens between the tank and the floor had become loose the j bolts were not tight so tank moved, bumped when hitting one of the many potholes

Re: Broken tap
Nice one, should save you some messing that, mine is a slightly different tap where the part you turn is on the end, with a bit of luck there may be enough to try the same, nothing lost in trying anyway. Thank you
