Peugeot Poor customer service
On a recent trip to North Wales from Portland Dorset in our Peugeot Boxer camper-van, the engine warning light came on. Our nearest Peugeot dealer is Howards in Dorchester, so we called in to them. I asked the man at customers service if a mechanic could use the onboard diagnostic tool to advise us as to what the problem might be and was it safe to continue our journey. He was totally unhelpful telling us “we do not do vans” you need to go to Taunton, approximately 40 miles away. When I again asked if he though it was safe to do so he said if the van was running smoothly it would be OK just ignore the warning light.
We proceeded to Taunton, however we noticed another Howards Peugeot garage at Yeovil, so we called in there. Again we were told to go to Taunton, again no one was willing to give us any help saying the diagnostic tester did not reach outside and the van was too big to go through their door.
We proceeded to Taunton to another Howards Peugeot garage. There we were told I would have to book a service for them to diagnose the problem. When I said we were on route to Wales the customer service receptionist said we would have to wait an hour and a half for a mechanic to ‘have a look’.
We decided to proceed to North Wales, where we arrived with no further problems. The next day we called a local garage in Llandudno who told us to come straight in. On arrival the mechanic plugged in the onboard diagnostic tester and identified the fault was with the cooling fan. He looked under the bonnet but could not see anything wrong, he looked under the van and spotted a broken wire to the fan. Our van was immediately put on ramps and the broken wire repaired. The whole repair took just over an hour. The service was excellent, the garage was neither a Howards or a Peugeot dealer.
On looking in the Boxer manual with regard to the engine warning light, it advises to go immediately to a Peugeot dealer. I would suggest that is the last resort, and definitely not a Howards Peugeot garage.
If you have a problem when touring North Wales I would recommend LLandudno Garage 01492 877501

A salutary story. Thanks for sharing!
By the way, what is the relpy which shouldn't be under-estimated? Sounds like a small furry animal to me, but valuable?

Your story pretty much sums up my experience when trying to get the first service done on my Symbol. I tried 5 Peugeot main dealers before I gave up and found a local workshop that were everything Peugeot weren’t.
The only person I’ve heard of that has found a helpful Peugeot dealer is Richard (rgermain) with one local to him on the south coast.

I have often wondered if Ford Dealers would look at these vans if it wasnt a warranty issue, after all our Warwick is plastered with FoMoCo and Ford stickers under the bonnet

Buy a code reader (around £10/15 from likes of Aldi, Lidl or Amazon) and keep it in the van. You can then decide if urgent or not and whether to continue journey. Some codes can be pretty general but you can get an idea of the fault.

If anyone needs a Peugeot main dealer garage in Cornwall, Hawkins of St Stephen, near St Austell, take vans as well as cars. Like a lot of Cornish businesses, they suffer from the do it drekkly thing.
Ford and Fiat vans main dealer is Vospers Commercial at Threemilestone, Truro.

I am sure I am not the only one to find a good Peugeot Commercial dealer, also one in Chichester.Dbvwt wrote:Your story pretty much sums up my experience when trying to get the first service done on my Symbol. I think the problem is many try a car dealership which does not have the facilities for vans.
My local Ford main dealer on Hayling who we always use for service and buying cars, could not help with a service due to height access problems.

Richard, I think you are correct that many try the car dealerships which understandably can’t deal with a Boxer. I made a point of searching out the commercial dealers and all 5 still weren’t interested.
Good to hear of others, might be worth creating a list on the forum as this issue often crops up.

Good. At their Plymouth depot, they also deal with Peugeot vans but don't have the franchise in Cornwall.rgermain wrote:I have used Vospers for buying service items online and found them excellent, very quick deliveryTinwheeler wrote:If anyone needs a Peugeot main dealer garage in Cornwall, Hawkins of St Stephen, near St Austell, take vans as well as cars. Strange, I get reminders from Hamble often, they seem to want my money.
Just cannot understand why 5 were not interested in your van, I take it they were all Peugeot agents?

Re: Peugeot Poor customer service
We have only experience of two Peugeot dealers. My other half prefers an annual service, regardless of manufacturer guidance, to be on the safe side. We generally use our good local independent garage for convenience and honesty.
1) Robins and Day (Salford) When our van was one year old we took it for an oil change and it took a lot of convincing for them to do it, even though they did eventually for £99 (had an offer on). It also went back at about 4 years old to have the oil-change reminder reset £48 (our indy can't do it). I don't expect red carpet treatment, but a little bit of politeness wouldn't hurt them.
2) RRG Oldham, had a recent service there when the oil thing was co-incidentally flashing again. Really friendly people and a good price, would probably use them all the time, but it is quite far and they don't offer loan vehicles. I would recommend them without hesitation. They even sent us a Youtube video of the underneath.
Our van has had nine oil changes, four fuel & air filters & two brake fluid changes in nine years and 48,000 miles. Probably in reality a bit overkill, but it certainly doesn't do any harm. Original pads/discs still good too.

Re: Peugeot Poor customer service
Luckily we have a local independent garage that specialises in vans and light commercials. Been using them for about 20 years and always give good service and advice. As they see a lot of high mileage vans there is not a lot of problems they haven’t seen.
Motorhomes form a small but regular side of their business.
Could be worth talking to local businesses that have vans who they use.

I used to use Robins & Day at Morden. Trevor Guy, the service manager, is hands on, diligent and a tugger so knows about recreational vehicles. I used them for my Fiat Ducato Hymer before the Nuevo. Their workshop can cope with the weight of a motorhome but the entrance can ONLY JUST take my Nuevo which is exactly 3m high including the Domestic Aircon unit.

Re: Peugeot Poor customer service
We booked our van in for it's 2 year service with Robin and Days Stockport, here is my feedback on Google:
Be aware, when you phone the Stockport number the call is automatically put through to Manchester. When I booked my service via the Stockport number, I was not asked which depot I wanted to use, I assumed I was booking into Stockport. We got up at 6.00 to travel to Stockport for 8.30 only to be told 'we've got no record of you booking here'. The desk staff were very rude with a 'couldn't care less attitude'. When I have used this company in the past I have found the mechanics very helpful, pity the front desk aren't. I will not be using this company again.
I ended up doing the service myself, it cost me around £100.00 for the oil oil, fuel and air filters. It took me 1 hour to complete. They were going to charge my £349.00. The van has never run better which makes me wonder if they have ever changed the oil!

We’ve been to Pinnacle at Stockport a few times for service, MOT. Not the cheapest, but knowledgeable and no ‘extras’ and unlike many main dealers, plenty of place to park.
