Broken glass Hob Lid
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a replacement glass hob lid for the Spinflo 62000 Caprice 2020 oven/grill/hob cooker in my 2001 Symbol?
Failing that... can anyone supply measurements or a template for it.
The original was a dark smoked colour with an applied texture, and had a rectangular-ish cut-out at the front.
I broke it in 2008 when I closed the lid but never noticed I'd left a burner on. The explosion of shattering glass was impressive.
I looked and looked to find a replacement without success.
I was going to get a new one cut and toughened by a local glass merchant, but then I (stupidly) had a brainwave that a stainless steel one would be idiot-proof and shatter-proof. The resulting product I paid a local fabricator for is awful. I installed it... but every time I look at at it it just annoys me.
Time to do it right.

AS parts list has a Caprice MkIII lid, might that suit? Page 13.

According to Jackson Leisure the Caprice mk3 lid is the same as the 2040 and does not fit the 2020.
"Thetford Spare Glass Lid SSPA0234 will fit the following Caprice models: 2040 and MK3. Will NOT fit old Caprice 2020 model"

I had a look at that glass lid from O'Leary Motorhomes and don't like it at all. It's just clear glass.
I can get the same thing locally, cut from smoked glass and toughened, for less money.
I don't object to paying a highish price if it looks the business as well as fitting and functioning as it should.
But I'm intrigued about the warning on the Jackson Leisure website saying that the Caprice MK3 replacement won't do for the Caprice 2020, because apart from the different front edge shape, which wouldn't prevent fitting & use or offend my eyes, the sizes are identical... depending on who measures them.
O'Leary's website gives dimensions of 485mm x 445mm for the 2020 version and 486mm x 445mm for the MK3 version. That's one millimetre difference in width, which makes no difference at all.
I can't see the glass being a significantly different gauge... which could cause a mismatch with the slot in the hinges... and I'm certain the black back edge on the MK3 version is no more than black paint rather than any kind of bonded metal strip.
So I phoned Jackson Leisure and spoke to their technical guy. Although knowledgeable and helpful, he couldn't offer any further insights than my own. He suggested I write to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and ask why they advise against using the later glass lid. I did that and am now waiting.

OK.... as it seems I'm getting nowhere fast on this, now all I'm asking forum members for is.....
either a template, or just millimetre accurate dimensions for the glass lid.
I can't seem to get through to Thetford-Europe, so that's a dead-end.
I could just chance it and buy a MK3 lid and find out for myself if it fits or not, and maybe waste some money........... but I'm now forced to favour just providing measurements to a local glass supplier and get them to do me a toughened black glass lid.

I've rung Thetford in the past and they simply don't answer the customer service number, nor do they answer emails. Presumably dealers must have a different number to call, otherwise how do they do any business.

If you are going to have one made make your own template out of thick cardboard or hardboard, easy enough to do

Re: Broken glass Hob Lid
I think Pilchard's problem is that he has no original to make a template from - just a bad replica made from stainless steel?
It doesn't help his specific problem, but when you have accurate dimensions, another option is to make up a replacement in Perspex. I did that on mine, because I hate the look of scratched glass, which is almost unavoidable unless you are very disciplined about never putting things on top of the original. I used a wire brush wheel to make the whole perspex lid matte (i.e. pre-scratched!), so that I could then use it as a work surface without worrying about it.

You don't need the original to make your own template, you make it to fit the space you have

Yes, you can make your own template to fit the space, but you won't know exactly how much clearance the original had so that it fits exactly right. You can make a template from the stainless replacement, but then you are making a template of a template. In my experience it is a ~lot~ easier if you can just trace around an original, compared to having to invent what you think the original would have looked like?
Having said that... I was caught out making a template of a glass original in perspex. Perspex seems to have a different rate of expansion by temperature, so my Perspex replacement has a tendency to stick in very hot weather because it has expanded too much! "Luckily" it mainly seems to be cold and wet when I go away, so it's not a major problem...

Re: Broken glass Hob Lid
It was the original dimensions I was really asking for. As mine long ago became a pile of shattered grains of glass, I can now only make an educated estimation of the original size. If I'm going to go to the trouble of getting one made, I'd rather it were an EXACT copy of the original dimensions.FreelanderUK wrote:pilchard wrote:OK.... as it seems I'm getting nowhere fast on this, now all I'm asking forum members for is.....

I seem to remember measuring the thickness of one of the little broken cubes of glass and finding the thickness was 4mm. As 4mm seems not to be a stock size with ordinary glass merchants... 3mm being the closest, I'll have to do it on-line. But before I go ahead, I really could do with some evidential verification from a forum member that has this cooker... a Spinflo Caprice 2020... giving me WIDTH, DEPTH, and THICKNESS of this glass lid.
So....... is there anyone out there that has a Spinflo Caprice 2020 in their van... probably dating from late 1990's to early/mid noughties... that can give me dimensions... accurate to within 1mm of the glass lid? WIDTH, DEPTH, THICKNESS.

When we had the Autotrail the wife left the hob on and the glass shattered, we tried everything and everywhere to get a new lid with no joy what so ever ,it cost the wife £450 for a full new oven from Magnum Motorhomes
