Mobility scooter carrier
My mate next door has just made me carrier for Christine’s mobility scooter, fits to the back of the Motorhome and I can also use the bike rack to carry my bikes, booked in for powder coating Monday, it pivots so can be stored in the vertical position and quick release pins fitted so it can be removed when on site and stored under the van, number plate and lighting board to be fitted after powder coating[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: Mobility scooter carrier
nice job, but watch that rear overhang...your van is now over 7m! the size of a DPD/Yodel delivery van..

Re: Mobility scooter carrier
It’s the same depth as having the bike rack down, it was made to measure for that scooter to keep the width and depth down to a minimum

Re: Mobility scooter carrier
i understand that, im just saying youve added (an estimate of) around 70cm to the length of the vehicle, bringing it over 7m, irrespective of the height of the addition.
my point was that, this will be out of sight of your mirrors and, while you may have a rear camera, its still easy to forget youre driving something a fair bit longer than you usually do, especially when reversing into tight-ish space/pitch.
at least with the bike rack down you could see the wheels each in your mirrors, with the narrower scooter platform, you probably wont..
dont fret, im not knocking your mates handiwork, merely offering some sage advice about the potential effect of adding length to the overhang of a vehicle....ive seen the results first hand....

Cheers Chris, thanks , I have used the bike rack to carry the scooter before but then I couldn’t take my bikes , so this is a better option , my last van was near to 7m with the back box on and I reversed that it a few fencesbolero boy wrote:i understand that, im just saying youve added (an estimate of) around 70cm to the length of the vehicle, bringing it over 7m, irrespective of the height of the addition.

Re: Mobility scooter carrier
Great job!!!
Is that a TP3 tow bar I spy there?
Have you stood out the outer most edge of the platform? Does it flex much on the tow bar point if you bounce up and down on it?
What will you use for ramps?
What does the scooter weigh?
Sorry for all the questions but I've tried a few over the years for my wife's scooter now, and they each have their own pros and cons.

The tow bar was fitted when I bought the van, it has the middle strengthening bar welded on to the bracket, I have stood on out and there is a little flex but nothing to worry me the suspension moves more than the flexRogerThat wrote:Great job!!!

the scooter weighs 43kg with the battery fitted with the battery off I can lift the scooter on to the carrier,
I am going to have to use a spacer between the bracket and tow bar as in the vertical position there is not enough room to lock it off because it catches the ladders, it will only be used for certain trips as we also have the mobie scooter that folds up and sits between the seats

Re: Mobility scooter carrier
At only 43kg plus weight of the carrier, you’ll not notice it is there.
We carried a 100kg scooter plus the weight of the rack itself all over U.K. & Europe and never felt anything untoward in the handling/ride.[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Have you shared details of your platform here previously @StewPotch?
If so, can you point me in the right direction please?

Re: Mobility scooter carrier
It’s an Alko Sawiko carrier. Rated to carry a max of 145kg though the scooter I had was just over 100kg.
It slides in/out of two brackets fitted to the chassis.

When we changed vans, I removed the carrier and still have it.

All finished now, powder coated a nice silver and fitted to the van with a 2inch spacer so that it doesn’t foul the ladder or bike rack, I have stood on the outer edge and there is no flex at all, the only movement is on the suspension [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: Mobility scooter carrier
I had been to the weigh bridge before fitting the scooter rack in full touring condition ,full fuel, water and awning, full of food and clothes for a weeks trip, gas tank half full, minus the scooter but me and the wife onboard and weights were
Front 1700kg
Rear. 1800kg
Gross 3520kg
Today I visited same bridge with full everything except waste tank (empty) including the scooter rack fitted with the scooter on the back just back from a 3 week trip and my new weights were
Front 1660kg
Rear 1940kg
Gross 3640kg
The rack weighed about 30kg and the scooter weighs 47kg so adding the rack to the Towbar over hang has added about 70kg due to the extra behind the rear axel, still plenty of leeway left due to 4500kg gross weight
