Re: CV Vaccine
How long before all these other countries realise they already have the variant, but we detected it first because we do so much more genome sequencing than most of them?
I'm not usually into conspiracy theory, but isn't the timing absolutely perfect when Boris et. al. are terrified of a third wave due to the inevitable Christmas and New Year super spreading!
He closes down the South East first so the North can't complain about being picked on again.
Within days, if not hours the new variant will be found all over the country, (thanks largely to the hordes of cretins who bolted from London yesterday) so then he can justify locking the rest of the country into Tier 4, at least until the festive season is over.
I don't suppose this is the true scenario, but you can see how the conspiracy theories emerge . . . . and it does make you wonder a bit, specially since it appears the variant was first detected in September??
P.S. Has the panic buying in the supermarkets started yet?

Shouldn't be long if the media keep up the relentless tirade of "there will be shortages eventually" stuff.
As for the three week lockdown, when they say it I hear three month lockdown. No way a three week lockdown will make any difference.

Tier 1 Cornwall cases have risen 264% in the last five days. I will take a higher tier.

Well the TT has already been cancelled in June next year and rumour has it it that Glastonbury might not be going ahead. It doesn't look promising for the Olympics either.
So I think you're right, we're looking at a while longer than three weeks.

As of Friday (when I last spoke my client) The Olympics was full steam ahead for 2021 (the client is a vital supplier).
Of course, things can, and will, change rapidly in the current circumstances.

Re: CV Vaccine
If the latest info is correct, the Oxford vaccine should be approved on 28th or 29th December.
If that is so, and if there is enough available to roll out early in January, it should be possible to get back to very near normal by Easter, if not before. Depends on how rapidly the vaccine(s) can be administered.
You would think??
Once the third group of over 70s have been done, surely it will be safe enough, and herd immunity will be getting under way.

Just tried your calculator Paul, which tells me I should be due for the jab between 31/12/20 and 31/01/21 I had it at my local surgery on 19/12/20. Don,t take the results too seriously.

Covid-19 deaths
Quite right Mike, there are a couple of Radio 4 podcasts well worth listening to, in order to get the FACTS rather than the general rubbish which is swilling about. One is called "More or Less" - always worth listening to, the other is just for the present crisis and it is called "How to Vaccinate the World". Should be able to pick them up on BBC iPlayer but I take both via the BBC Sounds app. The normal stats for deaths amongst those who are 85+ are a real eye-opener.Mike187 wrote:There is another sad fact that will no doubt will be picked up by The anti vaxxers and twisted for there own ends. As the majority of people receiving the vaccine are in their 80s or 90s it is sadly true that some of them will naturally die in the next few months and there will be those that claim it was the vaccine that killed them, what ever the cause was, and of doctors will be covering up the truth by putting something else on the death certificate.

Another loyal listener of both those programs. I was hooked by “More or Less” quite a while ago and now I am fascinated how statistics are used and often abused. Did you hear Tim Harford reading his book “ How to make the world add up” on Radio 4, worth a listen.
Yes I was surprised by that stat about deaths over 85, average of 1000 a day if I remember rightly, that’s expected average deaths without Covid-19..

Yes I’ve heard that programme sometimes, and found it interesting. The book was on my Christmas list but to no avail. You’ve sort of jolted me into seeking it out more regularly. You will of course have heard me shouting at the TV when the news reporter quotes meaningless statistics. For example “The sale of widgets has increased by 57%” ...without stating a time period...Week, Month, Year?Mike187 wrote:Another loyal listener of both those programs. Re: CV Vaccine
As the OP can I weigh in again. Today we have the good news that the Oxford Astro-Zeneca vaccine has been approved and there should be dancing in the streets (at a social distance ). However listening to Matt Hancock being interviewed just now on the BBC almost every question was preceded by “Yes but”... Why isn’t it” ...“can you not”....with a sense of veiled sneering. It had only been announced an hour earlier. I’m glad I don’t have his job.I know journalists are meant to probe but it is for once a good news story. I’ll go back in my box now until called forward.

Good news indeed, but I think we're in for some confusing and conflicting reports in the coming months.
For example, reports hint that the vaccine may not be as effective against the now predominant English and/or the South African strain, but it will only take 6 weeks to modify it.
So does this mean that those who have had the original vaccine will have to also have the later one?
Those who haven't yet had the original vaccine might as well wait for the latest one?
Can you have the original first one followed by the modified second one a month or six weeks later?
Can you have your first and second vaccine from different companies?
Al.

That was discussed with a scientist on Times Radio this morning, and for now at least the answer appears to be ‘ no as there hasn’t been any research done on this.

Incidentally Matt Hancock was also interviewed and they listened to his answers, questioned him hard, but didn’t try to score points. I’m no fan of Hancock, but right now his job is horrendous.

This is almost convincing. The use of English is often the give away, in this case “Confirm ownership of address”. That being said the whole look of it is somewhat convincing but it’s when they start talking of bank account details that sets alarm bell ringing. Having said that we on the Forum tend to be a bit savvy on this sort of things but I fear many will be taken in. Scumbags. Oh had a message yesterday saying my mobile account was to be closed due to payment problems.

That was reported in the Welsh update a couple of weeks ago, apparently known it was to happen while factories upgraded to produce even greater quantities, normal (even greater) service to be resumed by 1st March.mikethebike wrote:Sorry where did it say that?

Not reported in the English press . No one asking the right questions from weeks ago.!
So why is it so low on Mondays and so reasonable on Saturdays?
I am talking a month ago.
Very suspicious to me.
All these lock down times will be better if we keep Vaccinating.

With staggering timing they decided to extend their factory in Belgium just as the vaccine was urgently required, declaring that it would not compromise production . . . but unfortunately they would not be able to supply as much as they thought!
As far as I know there has been no report of the Oxford vaccine being in short supply??
