A kettle for the gas hob
With our previous van a Duetto space was at a premium, for heating water on the hob we used a small Gelert kettle with a folding handle, it was just OK for two not really for any more. I also had to add some silicone tubing around the handle because it got hot, and lifting off the kettle lid was also a challenge to avoid getting scalded.
I know there are collapsible kettles with silicone sides which look attractive, but are they practical?
Have you any recommendations for a kettle with a folding handle that's used on a gas hob?

We've had one of these for years. Several brand names, Outwell, Vango, all the same just get the cheapest

As total camping novices about 15 years ago we bought one of those that Paul links to and it is still going strong in the van now.
I will disagree though Paul about just getting the cheapest, it’s the colour that really matters, ours is a lovely orange

We’ve had a collapsible silicone kettle for 6 years now and it’s given no problems at all. No smell, no water taint, no hint of the collapsible walls weakening or not popping up aftervit is put away. Absolutely fine. Stores in a space little bigger than a paperback book.
It’s an Outwell one from Go Outdoors and, for Dbvwt, it’s green.

I've had a Kampa silicone folding kettle with a 1.2l max capacity for the last 3 or 4 years and it's been no problem. I see you can get an electric version too now, but mine's just the type that goes on the stove. I think it was £12, but they've gone up a bit now.
For the record, it's a nice bright blue!

Thanks again, it's an excellent kettle.

I think it’s having a whistle that’s important on a gas kettle! Too easy to forget, and unlike an electric, won’t turn off automatically. I speak as an individual responsible for some serious kettle damage on our stove at home:shrugg:
We have a small Gelert, the handle will slide on and off but is quite secure in use.

Love to help, ours is about 1 ltr, folding handle really compact.
Problem is we bought it in a street market in Malta!!
(Hence why its still known as the Maltese kettle!!)

Re: A kettle for the gas hob
We have a few kettles amongst our camping gear in the loft. One of them was used by managements parents on there Calor gas stove during the power cuts in the sixties
When we were having the Rienza serviced we had a look round there shop. They had whistling kettles for a fiver. It was an improvement on our old camping kettle. It has survived well for the price apart from the handle snapping off at one end when it took flight on a roundabout, I left it on the hob.
Not wanting to waste a fiver I repair the handle. The fiver for a new one can go towards parking fees.

Our metal whistling kettle is in our gear disposal bin.
It was purchased 12 years ago when we bought our first motorhome and used about three times before we bought a 240V mains camping kettle. It's not been used since and is in as new condition.

Re: A kettle for the gas hob
The silicon folding kettle we have is fine apart from one thing it doesnt have a whistle. It's a nuisance as we have to keep an eye on it on the hob and as the old saying goes a watched kettle never boils. The daughter bought it for us several years ago but I'm seriously thinking of reverting back to the old style with a whiste.

Agreed, a gas kettle needs a whistle...overfill the thing and leave it too long....not good.Doingitforthedawgs wrote:I think it’s having a whistle that’s important on a gas kettle! On our second one now (in 12 years) needed one a tad larger than our first one, still easy to store with folding handle.

Re: A kettle for the gas hob
Our small electric kettle went with the caravan. We now have a 1 litre aluminium camping kettle with a fixed plastic handle that doesn't get hot and a trigger operated filler/whistle. It is metallic blue, cheap as chips and works on both our electric hot plate and gas ring. Unlike our previous electric kettle which had a plastic body, the water is untainted. With a bit of a wiggle it stows in the pan locker beneath the oven when we are underway. It lives on the stove the rest of the time with the glass lid up. 1 litre is just right for two mugs of tea and it doesn't take too long to boil. Care needs to be taken not to over fill it.
