Radio upgrade 1998 Duetto
Hi all am having fun and games upgrading from the fitted Ford radio cassette player ( well you got to do something to pass the time) I think there may well have been an amplifier in the system as one connector is an iso adaptable one but the other is an edge connector (with much smaller wires) ,any body got any ideas?

My memory on this has faded, as I last did the job on mine (now no longer mine) around 15 years ago, but IIRC the amplifier is mounted above the glovebox. Once I discovered that, I didn't have much trouble changing from the factory radio/cassette to a Sony headunit, which then worked fine for the remaining 10 years that I owned it.
BTW, if the original radio cassette still works Ok, don't throw it away - they fetch Ok money on Ebay in good nick. I found mine in the loft a couple of years back and I think it fetched almost £30 (but it was completely mint).

Our Duetto was the same as Rooperts. I tried by passing the amplifier above the glove box but the speaker output was rubbish.
A friend of mine worked alongside a car audio specialist so he sorted mine. He changed the wiring to standard plugs should I ever wanted to swap the CD player again.
Aparantly the Tourano was the base for some of the Duetto builds. They were a posh Mk5 Transit mini bus with things like heated seats and rear speakers hence the amplifier.
The CD player I fitted was a Sonny unit from my Discovery. I thought the sound was rubbish until I fitted it to the Duetto. Without the Landrover bangs and rattles and tyre noise you could here the radio above 40 mph and CD,s didn’t skip.

The one annoying thing about Sony headunits (or at least the ones with a removable face) is the plink-plonk noise that Sony use after you turn off the ignition (supposedly to warn you to remove the facia).
The last thing you need when you park up late at night on a campsite is to turn off the ignition, open the driver's door and treat the neighbours to that stupid noise from the door speakers. Sony didn't include any option to disable it, so you have to remember to remove the face before you turn off the ignition!

Mine had a removable front but I don’t remember it making plink plonk noises. The front fell off a couple of times when we were in the Pyrenees with the Disco. Having said that it was a week of very rough roads. We were one of the few not bolting something back on before we drove back to the UK.
The cassette player from the Duetto went to the guy that sorted the wiring. I have no idea what did with it.

Ever since owning my van, & a few seconds after switch off, there's always the 'bee-poo, bee-poo' sound coming from the back somewhere, & everytime i'd got to the back to have a listen, it'd stopped!!
It really bugged me & this morning me & 'er-indoors' took it in turn to have a listen whilst the ign was turned on & off, finally traced it to the roof-speakers, so it had to be radio orientated, then I remembered you post, YES, the bloody speakers!!!
Removed the radio front panel & zilch, no sounder.
I can sleep contently from now on.

It's such a ridiculous feature, because Sony could trivially have included an option to disable it in Setup. I did toy with the idea of an NE555 based timer and a relay to cut the speaker outputs for 30s after ignition off, but then I came to my senses and just tried to remember to remove the front panel instead!
BTW, it sounds as though yours (assuming it's a Sony) may have the front and rear speakers reversed, as I ~think~ the plink-plonk noise is only supposed to come from the front speakers?

No, i'm going more deaf as the years take their toll, ( too much heavy metal in the 60s & 70s I think )
To me, the radio sounded crap, bought expensive replacement door speakers, still crap, then I realized!!
I have the sound bias set more to the rear roof-speakers as it sounds better whilst driving,
ah well as they say.
