Anyone tried to tax their car recently?
Tax on my car expires 31st April so I logged onto the Govt. site to renew.
It spat me out because I don't have an MOT certificate. I didn't anticipate a problem as there's now a 6 month extension.
What have I missed??
Edit. Just discovered that you have to wait until three days before the MOT was due before applying to renew vehicle tax.
Can't understand why, but that appears to be the situation.

Has your MOT expired yet?
I understand the extension would only be applied when the MOT actually expires. So, you'll probably need to wait until then.

Yes, it will be extended a few days before it expires. Check three days before and if not there is a email to contact see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-mots-for-cars-vans-and-motorcycles-due-from-30-march-2020

Nice one Cymro!!
Roger: Likewise my car, but I can't tax it online as yet. Can't see the logic in making us wait until just a few days before it's due? No doubt there is a reason, but it's not immediately apparent to me.
Thanks Peter. I had eventually found that link.
Edit:- Just tried again, and was spat out once more. What has Roli got that I haven't?

Re: Anyone tried to tax their car recently?
Its odd you couldnt do it Dave. Have been talking to a mate in Wales this morning whose van was due for MOT and Tax and he also had problems. When he queried it over phone he was told to try again in 2 weeks time ?

Re: Anyone tried to tax their car recently?
I have put our three vehicles on D/D to tax. Saves me forgetting. MOTs and Insurances are entered in my computer's calendar a few weeks before they are due.

Hi Peter
I just discovered that gov.uk are offering a service whereby they will tell you via text ot email when your MOT is shortly to be due.
Good service I thought!

Re: Anyone tried to tax their car recently?
Could I ask why people are so desperate to renew their tax when their old one doesn't expire for another 3 weeks??
Half of us might be dead by then..
Unless I'm going to be away, (not applicable to any of us right now) I renew the night before it's due.

Re: Anyone tried to tax their car recently?
Does it cost less if you wait until the last minute?
It has to be paid, so I'm inclined to do it as soon as the reminder comes through. Can't see that it makes the slightest difference whether it's done early or at the last minute. I just like to get it out of the way - it's one less chore to bother with then.

Seems the fine for driving with no tax is £80, halved if paid within 28 days. No points on your licence

Re: Anyone tried to tax their car recently?
I got booked last year while taking the van for an MOT while sorned (subsequently cancelled) and the fine from memory was a lot more than £80 although I see on line that £80 is indicated. I am now confused.groundhog wrote:Seems the fine for driving with no tax is £80, halved if paid within 28 days. No points on your licence

Hardly an incentive to follow the law though is it, fine should be 10 times that!
Better yet scrap road tax altogether and add a couple of pence to a litre of fuel.

Hi
I thought you were allowed to drive to a prearranged MOT because you can’t tax the vehicle without it. I think I would have contested that.
Works for me shame it won’t happen. I have a spare car that I use when I can’t take the van (height barriers, multi story car parks etc) and I pay more a year in road tax than petrol. My choice to keep the car though.

Re: Anyone tried to tax their car recently?
I used to use an app for the reminders but rarely got a reminder. I found out a couple of years ago that the DVLA did same thing so have used it for couple of years now and it does work. If I remember correctly a reminder comes 4 weeks before then another 7 days before.Gromit wrote:Hi Peter
