Diesel Heater Topaz
Please can anyone tell me which battery, the diesel heater in a 2006 Topaz, is powered from?
Many thanks
Many thanks

Re: Diesel Heater Topaz
It's possible that A/S varied this on some conversions, but the standard way with A/S is to connect it to the leisure battery. That's how it is on our 2005 Trooper.
However, as far as I'm aware, they are always wired so that they will run while the engine is running - the EMC shutoff should not apply to the supply to the Eberspacher.

Re: Diesel Heater Topaz
Thanks Roopert, that's why I wasn't sure because it works with the engine running I thought it may be off the engine battery, but it makes sense what you say about the cut off not operating for the heater.
The reason I wanted to know is so I can make sure I'm recharging the correct battery when the heater has been used for a while.
I suppose I could attach a multimeter to one battery and see what the reading does when turning on the heater.

Sometimes, especially when it is cold and the leisure battery is low on voltage, the only way to get the heater to fire up is to start the engine, in order to raise the battery voltage and maintain this charge, until the heater has completed its initial start up (about 2 mins) when its initial power drain on the leisure battery falls back to the minimal current needed to power the fan.
Try a Search for 'Eberspacher' in the search box (top right) and you should fine a wealth of info on this subject

Voltage displays are so cheap these days that it's easy enough to make something yourself, or to buy a monitor that plugs into one of the sockets in the van. For the Trooper I made up this dual display to show the voltage at both batteries. It's fitted into a CBE blanking plate, and I think the blanking plate itself cost more than the two voltage displays together!

In the Trooper I removed and threw away the full-size mains socket and 12 Volt 2-pin outlet and put in a 3-way CBE panel instead, which makes far more effective use of the space. The above display fills one of the spaces in the CBE panel (which visually matches the Sargent control panel as well).

Re: Diesel Heater Topaz
In my 2005 Topaz the Eber is supplied direct from the leisure battery. ie. not from the leisure battery via the habitation control panel. You can run the Eber with the habitation electrics turned off.
When the engine is running the alternator charges the leisure battery, it therefore also supplies the Eber via the battery.

Thanks all, it's the leisure battery then. Now I know.

Re: Diesel Heater Topaz
as Frederic said the heater will not work when the volts drops low so when fitted in trucks and vans you can still start in the morning. the cut off is built into the heater its self .a tip for your heater is to remove the inlet and clean as dust will effect the temp sensor and the heater will not cut in when the temperature drops

Re: Diesel Heater Topaz
Or fit an auxiliary sensor in a more suitable place ie shoulder height when seated, though this may cost significantly. They are always fitted low down, in the case of the Topaz under the drivers floor with the return air intake in the drivers door foot-well, there's sensible!! It has been done by an A/S owner of a 2010 Topaz but I am not aware of the cost though I think it is offered by Eberspacher.

Re: Diesel Heater Topaz
You have a temp sensor for the van area and a sensor in side the heater on the inlet

Re: Diesel Heater Topaz
There is a controller to set the required temperature located in the habitation area but no temp. sensor. The sensor is in the air intake in the Eber body. Since it pulls the air from inside the hab area, it's irrelevant where its located. Keith

Re: Diesel Heater Topaz
That will be right as the footwell in a motorvan is perhaps the coldest place!

Temperature sensor for use with Eberspacher controller or timer units
Many standard heater kits from Eberspacher regulate room temperature by sensing the temperature of the incoming air at the heater inlet.
This makes for a very compact, usable system ‘out of the box’ installation, but sometimes this is to the detriment of a comfortable room temperature
This little sensor allows measurement of room temperature where you choose, allowing a much more comfortable and regulated climate where you need it .... in the living quarter
