Fractured alternator stone guard
I was checking over the engine yesterday and noticed some rust marks above the alternator, it turned out to be a broken mounting on the stone guard directly above the alternator. This break has caused the guard to vibrate and chaffe on the alternator wiring causing a deep cut in the outer mesh covering and had just started to cut into the insulation. This may be an isolated fault (hopefully) but it may be worth checking on all those same type vehicles out there. The stone guard can be seen from the top of the engine look to the left, near the intercooler, and the guard is bolted to the engine shrouding the alternator. I have made a temporary fix by by using a large washer to clamp whats left of the guard bracket to its mounting until I can replace the guard.

Re: Fractured alternator stone guard
A few years ago I noticed mine had fractured at one of the mountings points. Job to do I thought.
I opened the bonnet some weeks later and the entire shroud had gone..
I've never got round to replacing it, your post just reminded me.

Looks like it may be a fault with the mountings, what bothered me most was the chaffing of the cable.
