Cupboard shelving
I’ve thought for some time that shelving may be a better option than the coat rack in the cupboard.
Has anyone converted it by adding shelves. I was thinking of using those small white L shaped things to support the shelves that are in my kitchen cupboards at home, but I wondered if the wall in the sussex duo cupboard is thick enough. I think you have to drill a small hole about 5mm deep, and I’m worried about coming through the wall!
If anyone has done this I would be interested before I get the drill and safety goggles out.
Thanks

I too would be worried about coming through either wall. Have you considered a storage stack such as this...
I've not checked measurements but there are lots of this type of unit around so I'm not suggesting this actual unit...

I was thinking about the very same thing recently. I didn’t bother in the end but something like this would have been my choice. Those with sturdy shelf inserts seemed the best.

I think I’ll try these first. It appears to solve the problem, easily, cheaply and simply, without me being let loose with power tools.Dbvwt wrote:I was thinking about the very same thing recently. What an excellent idea!
If you could kindly share a photo when installed please? I'm tempted already!

We used large storage boxes fro Hobbycraft. Can get 3 , one on top of each other, ideal if away for a few weeks.

Re: Cupboard shelving
My problem is that I hate moving things to get at something. Hence why I’m going to get a new kitchen at home . That’s why I’m after shelving, and I like the idea of the hanging ones as they should still leave a bit of space for hangers at the side.Tengah74 wrote:We used large storage boxes fro Hobbycraft. Re: Cupboard shelving
We have had several sets of hanging shelves in our wardrobe: Ikea, Argos, Spanish Chinese bazaar ones and they have all failed. Either the support at the top has gone, the shelf parts have collapsed or the fabric has torn.
For the past 2 years we have had a storage unit exactly the same as the one in Paulmold’s link. Its been completely trouble free, with a square of non- stick matting under it it has not shifted, there is space for 2 coathangers next to it and fleeces on top. Additionally its handy to be able to remove the drawers and pack them at home to transport to the van. The castors come off easily.
A very good buy.

Re: Cupboard shelving
We leave our small pedestal table in place between the seats so that's saved some space in the 'wardrobe'. We removed the clamp that holds the stored leg in place in the cupboard as that was a health hazard leading to slit wrists. All told, I’m sure there’s some way of making the cupboard more practical.

Snap! So did we, though ours went up in the loft at home. Removing the table top makes no difference to the space available for the plastic storage unit but removing the leg and clamp that hold it has meant we can have 3 narrow shelves in the back of the wardrobe. They hold 2 pairs of walking shoes ( one pair on each, sideways on, and 2 packaway raincoats.
To stop anything falling onto the fuse unit etc at the back of the wardrobe we have a redundant domestic fridge shelf bag-tied in place in front of it.

Re: Cupboard shelving
I had the same thoughts with our duetto and purchased some thin plywood. Cut to size and each shelf supported with ply uprights lightly wedged into place. No screws required as the weight on the shelves holds it all in place
Easy to remove if required.

Re: Cupboard shelving
We have just tried the Amazon hanging wardrobe shelves, and they do not work for us.
There is a large space at the rear which is not accessible, the space at the side of the shelves would probably take two hanging shirts at most. It is quite fragile and may only last a season.

Small plastic shelf supports can be fixed to the walls using Sikaflex, you don't need to use screws.

Oh dear, please don’t hold it against me for suggesting that idea!
I do find these 2 hanging solutions are working well for me though...(pics to follow)

It fits perfectly!
Time will tell how durable it is, but it's ideal for clothes and towels - thanks again

Re: Cupboard shelving
I have fitted more shelves in my Symbol using the same shelf supports as in my kitchen.
So as not to drill right through the wooden side panels chose a drill the right diameter for
the supports. Put the drill into the drill chuck making sure it's fully in then drill down the length
of a piece of dowel. Cut the dowel to length with only enough of the drill showing to give the correct
depth of hole required. Drill the hole with the piece of dowel on the drill this way you cannot drill
right through providing the dowel has been cut to the correct length and the side panel is thick enough.

Re: Cupboard shelving
That’s a really good way; they are the things I was originally going to use, as I have them in my kitchen cupboards. My concern is how thick the cupboard panels in the van are. It would be just my luck to drill 5mm deep very accurately, only to find that the side panels are only 4mm thick.malc45 wrote:I have fitted more shelves in my Symbol using the same shelf supports as in my kitchen.
