Interesting dashboard problem Empty Interesting dashboard problem

Post by Ploughman Sun Nov 25, 2018 3:46 pm

E
Warwick XL 64 reg on Peugeot Boxer chassis.  LCD display on dashboard will light up sometimes when I open the door but not others (about 50:50).  When it fails, turning on  the ignition similarly fails to produce a display.  When it deigns to function it appears to behave normally (only twice have I had gobbledegook on the display)
Dealer and local garage said "Go to Peugeot dealer"  This I did, who tested it and said I needed a completely new unit at a cost of £1100.  Tried a local auto electrics place who took it apart and said it was a loose connection in the wiring loom; Peugeot/Fiat would not supply this without the complete unit.
Following comments on this forum, I contacted Cartronix in Waterlooville who first replaced the display panel and, when that didn't help, ordered and fitted a new "processor".  This too has failed to cure the problem.
Since the fault is intermittent I feel it must be due to a broken wire in the loom or a dry solder joint.
Has anyone else come across this problem - I know the usual dashboard problem is one of ghost lights - but not in my case.  Any help welcomed!

Certainly not a problem I've seen reported on here before.

When you have a minute, say hello here.....

Are you out of warranty by much? Was thinking you could push Peugeot to fix if it’s only out by a few months? Maybe?

Unfortunately it is out of the dealer's warranty (which only covered up to £500 anyway).  It is over 3½ years old now and I am the second owner.

I suggest asking on the MMM Forum, as Nick Fisher who is a FIAT expert and resides there, is often able to help with such problems:

I hope Nick Fisher still takes part on MMM as he's winding up his company.

Update:  I had a helpful reply from Nick Fisher on the other forum.
Further update. Just back from Cartronix (third time lucky) where Tony replaced an electronic component the size of a 5p piece in the cluster.  So far so good!

Thanks for the feedback, could you give us a further report in say 4 - 5 weeks time? It would be especially interesting if you could say what this 5p sized component was for?

Yes, I was not going to assume it is "cured" until it has been OK for a few weeks.
When I next contact Cartronix I will ascertain which component was replaced and let you know.

Just to say I had a disappointingly brief reply from Cartronix saying it was "the processor".

I would guess the 5p sized component was possibly a Lithium battery:

Perhap it will become an issue for all the later vans in the near future, Merry Christmas!

No - it was more like this fuse -Interesting dashboard problem 100301_large a little rectangular black body with two flat terminals.  But not a fuse, as the black body was thicker!
I would have liked more info - but there we are.  It was still working OK yesterday!

If the link above it is to the image and description of a 1A fuse that looks exactly as your image does.

No, I used the image of the fuse to show roughly what it was I was shown before it was fitted.  As I said above, the black "body" of the component was, I recall, thicker than that of the fuse.
If it was just a fuse, I wonder why Cartronix took three goes to replace it and why Peugeot quoted £1114 for a replacement dashboard unit!

Could it be something along the lines of a voltage stabiliser?  I know instrument clusters had them years ago.

Update:  The new bit worked for 6 weeks and then gave up - this time the dials (speedometer and fuel gauge &c) stopped as well.
Appointment made to take it to Peugeot.  Tested by me in the meantime on several days but no joy.
On trip over to Peugeot yesterday it all suddenly came back on again (which I feared would make it difficult to identify the problem).
However, I have just had a 'phone call to say that they found some loose connections, have tightened them, and all seems to be working!  Cost £200+ rather than the original £1100+.
Now I just have to establish why connecting the mains lead will charge the vehicle battery but not the domestic one! (Any ideas welcome -  or I might open a new thread)

In our Warwick duo if the control panel is off it charges the leisure battery  if iis on and the vehicle battery is selected it charges that.
