Rear nudge bar for a Kingham pvc
Hello. Hoping to protect rear of Kingham with a box section bar. Not using it as towbar. Simply to protect rear during manoeuvres. Have any colleagues produced same and able to offer ideas?
Thanks for your thoughts. Ian

Check out Armitage Trailers in Yorkshire. We had a square section of galvanised steel ‘nudge bar’ fitted just after we purchased our Broadway new in 2014. It looks good as it has a sleeve of stainless steel wrapped around it. Saved smashing the grp a few times! It was also strongly constructed by them to take a tow ball if we needed one in the future. Very pleased with it and Armitage’s work.

They should have some more gallery photos of the said ‘nudge bar’ on their website.
The example from ‘Hopetechnical’ website looks good and about the same price as ours from Armitages

Thanks for your info colleagues. I had hoped to do the job for less than the £360 or so quoted by suppliers using box section from metal sellers - I previously made them up for my last Burstner, earlierHobby and. Swift Bolero. I think I will have to do a mock up in thin ply and wooden batons then take it from there. After all it’s only a nudge bar nota tow bar.

Fit a reversing camera then hopefully you won’t need to hit things or other people’s vehicles to park up. No offence intended.

Already have a camera Mr Diplomat. I am seeking ideas on bar that others may have made up.

I have a rear view camera and still managed to 'nudge' my wife's car (cosmetic damage only) when manoeuvring outside the house.

How much worse would the car have been with nudge bar on van? Better though to have caught wife's car than the neighbours!

Yes the slight mark on the van just polished out and the flexible plastic bumper on the car pushed back into shape leaving a slight mark that you really have to look hard for.
A nudge bar would have left a proper scratch I think.

Re: Rear nudge bar for a Kingham pvc
Hi Ian , while I would say learn to manoeuvre the vehicle first before adding buffers, I have a cheap solution for you. If you go to a large electrical suppliers and ask for Unistrut.
It is a system like Meccano that is used to fabricate in the electrical industry. All sorts of lengths and brackets are available and I quickly fabricated a nudge bar for all my previous coachbuilts which attached to the existing holes in chassisc underneath. All parts come galvanised but can be painted to suit your taste.
From memory , the cross bar is 41 mm square and comes in lengths of 2 to 6 m. It is a u section channel but a plastic filler can be added to complete the 'box. ' Only costs a few pounds a length and easy to work with . End closure parts available to make a really professional job . Do not use the lengths with holes in....
All in the bar cost me around £30 to make and looked O.E.M. In fact a large motorhome retailer moved it from my old van to new on purchase and thought it a fsntadtic idea as they thought it was a manufacturer supplied part. .It is not strong enough to tow with but will fend off parking mistakes with ease ( either yours or others!) And if damaged can be replaced cheaply and in minutes, a lot cheaper to replace a bar at £15 than a rear panel at thousands! .
I also had my reversing camera attached to it and some reflective tape which added another level of visibility to others at night . More importantly you are not adding a lot of weight hanging at the rearmost end of your van. Job done!

Thanks Kaspian for a very constructive reply to my original question. Can’t believe the extent to which people will deviate from or hijack a topic.
I will look into it. Was considering 50mm box section with plastic end caps. A great task for today

Re: Rear nudge bar for a Kingham pvc
It would seem I touched a raw nerve, as I said no offence intended,.... or sarcasm, or name calling etc, just an honest suggestion. Plus a solution. I still do not see the need for nudge bars on a motorhome if a camera is fitted. Perhaps you might explain. Seems odd that you do not find Kaspians comment, "learn to manoeuvre" and other points made a wise crack or will you be berating Mr Sledgehammer as well for his help and thoughts on the subject. Please except my apologies.IanD wrote:Already have a camera Mr Diplomat. I am seeking ideas on bar that others may have made up.

Re: Rear nudge bar for a Kingham pvc
Not cheap but definitely by far the best. I had one of these on an old Transit camper i once owned and ran in a brick wall. Demolished the wall but the van and bar was totally unscathed! Just a few scratches on the bar. You know these things are good when you see so many commercial vans fitted with them. You can buy 'pretty' bars but they're pure decoration and useless for protection.Paulmold wrote:[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
