Turkish hammam towels
Just over a year ago I bought a set of peshtemerl ( hammam) towels for use in the van. We liked them so much that I bought more for home and, eventually threw out all my conventional towels. I have the standard ones as well as some childrens' ones as bath and hand towels. Standard is 90x170 cm, child sized 100x60 cm
They are perfect for use in the van; they are very absorbent, dry very quickly between use or after washing, wash, either by hand or machine, easily and don't take up a whole load when doing so. They fold up small for storage and are also useful for swimming, beach towels or throws. Frankly I can't think of any cons ! They are nothing like the dreaded microfibre towels, being pure cotton with a weave that dates back- it is said- to Roman times. The more you wash them the softer they get.
At the moment the shop that I bought them from has a half price sale so, if you have not used them and want to give them a whirl, now is a good time;

I have absolutely nothing to do with the shop other than being a very satisfied customer. The website shows limited colours. There are others if you look and several other firms selling them, including direct from Turkey.

Thanks Quilter.
Am calling the Memsahib as I type. (See, I can multi-task!! )
Agreed about microfibre towels - they are next to useless, and if these Turkish ones dry quickly that's a big plus point.

P.S.
Six towels ordered. At those prices they can't be bad.
Thanks again.

Let me know how you get on with them Dave. If you've ordered from the same place then they are very fast at delivering. I usually wash mine- just a short wash- before using for the first time.

Already had an email to say they have been dispatched.
Thanks again for the info. If Sian likes them as much as you I can see another order going in for the house.

I can only ask if you're about to open a hammam ?
Hope they come up to expectations or my name will be mud.
( You might like to read up on the history of the hammam towel online; some fascinating insights into Turkish culture)

Not a hammam Quilter, but I have a spa at the bottom of the garden, so get through quite a lot of towels when friends or family come around. I'll try anything to cut down on all the drying!
Cheers for the link.

Re: Turkish hammam towels
Have to agree with Quilter.
My wife bought a couple of hammam towels before we went travelling somewhere a few years back, before we had the van. After being initially sceptical I was soon converted and they are brilliant in the van for which we now have another set. They dry in minutes on the bike rack (before we leave site) or we hang them either side of the van along the storage gullys as we drive and they are always dry by the next stop.

Yes, ours too and although it feels rather strange to dry yourself with a big tea towel, they do "suck" much better than you would think.
Since then we have shown them to friends (on here) who are also going to order some.
Thanks Quilter.

Just ordered 4 more for the friends I mentioned, who will be away for a week - just in case the half price offer ends soon.
Nice one Quilter. Thanks again.

Hi,
Just bought some of these, when asked the company said wash on cold, is this what everyone else does?

I doubt it.chrisvesey wrote:Hi,

I expect Sian just threw them in the washing machine since there were no instructions to the contrary.
Just asked her, and she put them in "Delicates" at 30 degrees. I wonder if that's why they are only a foot square now!!
P.S. Probably worth washing them before use (I'm told!) as it makes them "suck" better. Strange feeling as I said before, like using a tea towel, but they do work well and dry very much quicker than fluffy towels.

I put mine in a normal wash, the sort I used for towelling towels: 30 deg C, bio washing liquid, 1600 spin. I put in a glug of fabric softener though I understand it is better not to do so when washing towels. Through most of the year I tumble dry washing and, if no softener, get static on some of the clothes which is not nice. I don’t use a hot wash for anything as this affects the active enzymes in the bio liquid.
One year on now and all the hammam towels are much like they were when new with no sign of wear.

P.S. The towels for our friend were ordered Monday and arrived this morning. Our own came just as quickly.
Can't complain about that!

Tried to order but only pink available. Not sure how that would go down with my street cred. I'm getting an email when grey is back in stock.

Hi Bob
The pink is not really all that pink. More like a faded red. I would mince across to the site showers with one - no worries!

Wasn't setting you up Bob.
It really wouldn't bother me, but Sian says I would go around like a scarecrow and never notice if she didn't tell me!

I could have been Bob. My sense of humour gets out of control sometimes.
I have never been able to take life, or myself, too seriously.
I've got a couple of pink towels for a friend (see earlier posts) and if the colour comes out anywhere near accurately on the screen I'll post a photo for you to look at.
