Truma boiler fault Empty Truma boiler fault

Our boiler went into fault code e149h but did not trip out the hot air. It got so hot it melted the plastic vent. I turned it off and  left it to cool down.  It's been fine since apart from melted vent. I can't understand why it did not trip out . If we had been asleep it could have been a different story. Any ideas ?        confused3
