A couple of months back I complained that we don't get stars in London. "Come to Yorkshire they said", so I did. 100% cloud cover.Libraryman2 wrote:Hehe great for amateur astronomy!

At least Norway should have stars I thought. Maybe, but I'm not awake at 2:30 which is probably when the 10 minutes of real darkness happens.

Re: Worst day of the year tomorrow (Sob!)
I loathe the dark nights so from tomorrow onwards I will start to mutter "The nights are drawing in!" to myself and anyone within earshot.
Then, as if I'm not miserable enough already by the end of October, the powers that be put the bl**dy clocks back! (As far as I can make out, they haven't yet invented headlights on cars and tractors in the Shetlands. Apparently, if the kids go to school in the dark they will be mown down in their thousands. Surely, the kids in Shetland are not so stupid that they walk to school in the middle of the road!)
After putting the clocks back there will eventually arrive the glorious 21st December!
If I haven't committed suicide by then (and manage to celebrate Christmas and New Year in a suitable manner) I will begin to notice that the days are drawing out by mid-January and start getting hopeful again; and by March I will be looking forward to putting the clocks forward again and enjoying three months of relative happiness until 21st June 2018 ...
... and then it will all start over again!!

Yep, from now on each day that passes gets shorter by approx three minutes moving ever nearer to the nuclear winter that seems to grip this tiny island sat in the North Atlantic. Then some of us will be anxious about the state of the batteries together with the dreaded damp.

Sorry to rain on anyones parade but the tilting of the earth on its axis and its movement around the sun is remorseless.
I have an App called “Daylight” that shows the sunrise and sunset times everywhere in the world. It also gives future data and here in Skegness between tonight and the 30th of June we will lose 5 minutes of daylight!
It’s not much, but as I pointed out, it's remorseless!

I don't allow the darker nights to get me down (much ). I discovered a portable source of golden light to fill the void, it's not endless unfortunately but, when it's exhausted, I go to the supermarket and buy another bottle

But not because " the nights are drawing in". In fact, looking at times of sunset here in south Oxfordshire, the first night that the sun sets earlier than on previous nights is Friday 30th June. Sunset is then at 21.26 not 21.27 as it is on Thursday 29th June.
The sun is rising later each day however and so the hours of daylight are getting fewer but, make the most of long nights until next Friday.

You are right and I didn't even notice.
But then again, luckily I didn't say anything about "the nights are drawing in", only "we will lose 5 minutes of daylight".
I can only assume that, like most things, it can be put down to either global warming or Jeremy Corbyn!!
Best regards,

It's all the earth- shattering events over the past year: they've pulled it out of normal alignment.

I remember when I was young there was no such thing as darkness and summer holidays were 7 months long and finished just in time for Christmas . And when night came it was really dark, not like this orange glow darkness we get these days.
That's proper GOM memories

You'd not be too far wrong about the summer holidays finishing in time for Christmas. I'm sure we'll see online retailers and shops setting out their Christmas stock some time in September.

And all those nuclear tests that were frequent events during the 1950s and 60s and latterly by North Vietnam. Man is surely destroying this fragile earth, this precious jewel in an sea of darkness. There's no plan 'B' despite what Prof Stephen Hawking has suggested. On a brighter note, we can all remain optimistic and cheerful through our motorhoming ventures. Hurrah!!Quilter wrote:It's all the earth- shattering events over the past year: they've pulled it out of normal alignment.

I agree with the first sentence ...
... but you obviously don't live in Skegness where they switch 80% of the streetlights off at midnight!
When I was a policeman back in the 1960's I served with a lad who was nicknamed "The Moth" because he used to flit from streetlight to streetlight throughout the night!
The powers that be transferred him to Mabletherpe, which in those days had only three streetlights on during the night, ...
... had a long stretch of beach parade with dunes on one side and empty holiday caravans on the other ...
... had Conference Points (places you had to be at) in the pitch dark sections of the town ...
... and he resigned a month later to the relief of the rest of us!
Best regards,

Florida! In the winter! You lucky sod!
I was born in Uganda and spent my early years running around Tanga on the coast of Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in just a pair of shorts. Snorkelling in the Indian Ocean was my favourite pastime. Now I am stuck in Sutton Coldfield and hate the British winters! Including the weather today! Now that we are retired I have pleaded with my wife, every year, for us to spend our winters in Southern Spain at least! But she just laughs at me!! Its no good I am going to have to leave her to become a full time game warden on the Serengeti Plains. Wish me luck.
Oh dear, whose going to make my sandwiches today. Oh well I might as well stay!
At least we have got our motorhome, our nomadic life style together, and my hot water bottle!
Rant over!
Pete

Re: Worst day of the year tomorrow (Sob!)
Weather where we are is cloudy but no rain and expected to get better with the HIGH approaching from the southwest. That's good for our week long stint in Devon next week. The 'North South Divide' is certainly true relating to weather patterns as our growing season is much longer down here. Might be an idea to move to south coast where you will be just a short hop over the channel to even sunnier hols.Maasai Warrior wrote:
