French tv reception without sat dish.
Good day to all
Our old Avtex 12v tv no longer picks up French broadcasts, since they went all HD last year, and cannot be upgraded internally. We don’t have a sat dish, just the digital aerial which came with the van.
I have found out that the new set needs to have a DVB-T tuner and am looking at one of the Cello Traveller TVs. Cello have confirmed this will work in France, but say to plug it through a sat dish, which we don’t have!
I have read the existing thread on French TV reception, but everyone commenting either seems to have a sat dish or plans to get one.
I don’t need to pick up any UK tv while in France. When we pitch up somewhere, I like to tune to the local broadcaster for local weather & news (and MotoGP and F1, if lucky!)
So I guess my question is if I buy a new tv with the correct tuner, can I view French tv channels through our existing digital aerial?
I would appreciate your experience of this, before I spend a lot of cash on something that won’t work.
Thanks
Gill

You actually need a DVB -T2 tuner or a DVB - S2 tuner for HD. The 2 means HD compatible and the T or S is Terrestrial (an aerial) or Satelllite (a dish). You sem to have been misinformed. I know nothing about the Cello Traveller. You can use the old Avtex and your areial if you buy a new DVB T2 tuner box and plug that into the back of the Avtex but its a faff. I had the same problem and Avtex gave me an £80 allowance against buying a new Avtex set. Since then Avtex prices have reduced. I got the 188DRS which does Terrestrial and Satellite as an upgrade but have noit yet bought a dish.

Re: French tv reception without sat dish.
Thanks for the info.
I did mean DVB T2, typing not as precise as it used to be! Also been told MPEG-4, whatever that it. The tuner box has been suggested, but as space is limited in our Warwick we would prefer a tv with all the necessary gubbins built in.
Decisions, decisions.
I appreciate your input.
Regards
Gill

I adopted the same solution as Ron (and I think we both got sets from the first batch that arrived in the UK). Super TV in all respects.

That's right, Peter, we did. And it is a great set - used most of the year in our kitchen.Peter Brown wrote:inspiredron wrote:You actually need a DVB -T2 tuner or a DVB - S2 tuner for HD. I think it is probably better value now because I saw it in Feb's CC Magazine at £300 for the 188DRS including an 8Gb stick as well. I rejected the tuner idea for the same reason as Gill as well as the faff.

Re: French tv reception without sat dish.
Thank you all. I did a bit more research and, after reading other online reviews, I decided on the Avtex L188DRS. Ordered. Job done!
Thank you all for your input.
