Cleaning roll out awnings Empty Cleaning roll out awnings

Post by Dave H Mon Aug 15, 2016 4:22 pm

Just returned from a very enjoyable few days at the "Western" show at Malvern with ASOC. Noticed when using the awning fitted to the side of the Nuevo that it needs cleaning. There seems to be grease spots on the underside in places.  Is it just a case of vigorous washing with warm soapy water or is there any specific solution recommended for this? Thanks.

Having had superb results cleaning shower walls then other bits with water mixed with a little concentrated bio laundry fluid (the same stuff cleans the toilet cassette whilst in use), I intend to try that on my awning when I have some time at the back end of the year.

I plan to spray the mix on, agitate with my long wash brush and then hose down.

Sounds like a good idea Peter. No room to wind it out on our drive so will have to ask a favour from a friend! Thanks

I did mine when we got back in July.  It was modeerately successful using washing liquid but I di not leave it long enough. Not sure if longer would help as it dries and I cannot se how the bio can work dry.  Quite difficult to agitate it to break up the nasties and form a gloopy soup! snigger snigger snigger

Try using toothpaste on any stubborn marks, works a treat. Had stains after wet leaves left brown marks, all cleaned away.

One more piece of advice, use your wife's toothpaste and brush rather than your own.up!

Leighton.

Thanks for those additional tips and the toothpaste advice but doubt if my Wife will allow me to get away with that!

....I use a Caravanstore roll out awning, just slides in the "C" awning rail. When it gets a bit grubby I spread it out on the lawn and clean it with a diluted mix of Sugar Soap, always comes up nice and clean. It helps not having to keep it on the 'van all the time, although my wife isn't very keen to have it stored in the back bedroom.....but it's better than using her toothbrush....

Thanks for your comments and clearly having an awning you can remove from the van makes cleaning a much simpler process. Perhaps I used the wrong term to describe the awning on the Nuevo as they seem to be called wind out awnings as opposed to roll out. Nevertheless the the sugar soap idea is another option. As for storage we remove the bed in the Luton and store that in one of the bedrooms over the winter. Takes up quite a bit of room. Thanks for your response.

We have the same problem...the toothpaste idea is appealing as it will also give a fresh mint smell too!

Sugar soap!  That's a great idea - but not with a toothbrush!

Managed to get the awning sorted last week. A dry sunny day with no wind over at a friends business premises with plenty of room to open out the awning fully. Used sugar soap successfully but a long job getting the stains out of the fabric with a small brush. Fortunately able to reach the spots which needed cleaning from a step ladder. Cleaned the roof while allowing the awning to dry thoroughly With the sun on the van the following day realised that there were streaks over the bodywork. Ended up giving it a polish so more of a job than I thought but pleased with the result. Job done, at last!

Good day all,

Spent most of the day 'sorting' the van following our trip. Mostly cleaning and sorting out the 8 loads of washing!
However, took Bad Penny's advice and has a go with toothpaste ( a freebie which SWMBO had picked up on a dentists appointment today!) and worked a treat! I did think about using her electric toothbrush but one look was enough!!
Thanks and can recommend.
