What is the paint called? Empty What is the paint called?

Evening everyone,
Just recently bought a 1998 Transit Duetto and apart from the naff looking cooker and hob am very pleased with the excellent finish.
It's just such a shame they used the rust bucket transit. I've owned a lot of different vehicles over the years, but never seen a vehicle that rusts so much.

I'm in the process of sorting the rust out, usual places, under the water heater, wheel arches and bottom of the back doors, my problem is the paint colour, I've had delivered 9 cans of Holts Ford Ivory white and used one of them today, but it is not a good match at all and looks pretty poor and very noticeable.

Are there different shades of Ivory white, or is it that I'm using new paint with old? does it have to have a cutting compound used on it after a few weeks to blend it in?

Is Ivory white a autosleeper colour or a Ford colour? I'm now a bit apprehensive of doing anymore at the moment.

I've got a picture of the newly painted area and also what looks like the paint code plate which does say Ivory White on it, but don't know how to upload them?

Thanks

Mike

From memory there were two Whites used - both Ford colours. I ~think~ the older one is the more beige of the two.

A quick internet search throws up this:

How do those codes compared to the code plate on your van?

[Edit: I should add that Halfords Ivory White was a pretty good match - to my surprise - on my '99 Transit]

It's Ivory and is a Ford colour.

Depending on how much work you need to do you may have been better off going to a reputable body shop. A top notch body guy will get exactly the right code and blend and feather your paint in to the point you can't even tell.

Your are some way off my area but take a look at this thread here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] two AS forum members i put in touch with a body shop i use. They posted photos up on the thread too.

Hi Mojo and thanks for getting back to me.
I wish I could post a photo, but can't work out how to do it, wants some sort of URL link?
Anyway, assuming this is the code under the bonnet, it says - VA70723H        71
                                                                                           9D   0      D
                                                                                           02552309 BRUCE
                                                                                            IVORY WHITE
Not sure what the Bruce bit means?

What is the paint called? <img src=" />Metal tag under bonnet
What is the paint called? <img src=" />The part I have sprayed is the panel under where the water heater goes which is different from the rest of the paint.
Looking at the cans, it says Holts Ford Ivory as apposed to Ivory White??

Hi Mike, you will probably find there could be 40 shades of ivory white depending on what day/who mixed/etc , the original paint .Also you have years of fading effects of sun and weathering to consider.  Best  thing would be to polish a small area to remove oxidised paint then go to a company who supply paint for cars to the trades. They should be able to match the colour of your van if you take it to them and they will either use a machine or good old paint tint charts to match YOUR EXACT paint and many will then mix and fill spray cans for you which are far better and achieve far better results anyway than the cans bought in halfords etc.
I always found whites difficult to match and remember a nightmare with vauxhall polar white which had 23 shades which honestly looked like 23 different colours but all white! It all depends on what tints are used at manufacture and in what quantities.Look locally for a car paint supplier who may provide a far better match than generic cans.best of luck!

Thanks everyone who got back to me, bit of a update.
Today I went to my local Halfords to try and find out what the colour was, the guy was very helpful and knowledgeable about paint etc. (makes a change!)
I took the painted front grill with me along with the plate under the bonnet numbers.
Apparently there is 15 different shades of Ford Ivory, it's definitely not Diamond white as this is to 'white'
The Halfords Ford Ivory is lighter then the Holts Ford Ivory, and he made a sample up and although this was a better match then the Holts, it still wasn't a match and to dark, it's almost like between Diamond White and their Ivory.
He couldn't get the match  from any of the numbers I gave him or the reg number and suggested the only option being to take it to a professional body shop where they can scan it in and get a near enough/exact match, depth thickness etc.
Or to paint the complete bottom part of the van and have a two tone paint work, which I don't want to do as it's a lot more work and I'll need a lot more cans of paint!
The annoying thing is, I bough and have had delivered 9 cans of Holts Ford Ivory, which is to dark, so unless I can send them back and get a refund, it might be a two tone Duetto!!
