Topaz - What is this for? Empty Topaz - What is this for?

Post by Balvenie Tue Apr 19, 2016 2:39 pm

On my 2009 topaz there is a short flexible tube hanging down underneath on the drivers side, between the Eberspacher exhaust outlet and the rear wheel.  I have never known what it is for. I cannot see it connected to anything under the bench seat. Recently there has been a few drips of water coming from it.

What is it, and should I be worried about the water?  Thought i would try this forum first before ringing auto sleepers!

Is it a connection tube from the heater to the blown air outlet?, I use to have a Topaz with that heater but is a while ago , that's the only thing I can think of, another Topaz owner will be along shortly who will know better that I.

From the description it sounds like the exhaust pipe from a diesel heater. We had one like that on the Truma Airtop we had fitted under the front passenger seat on our Innovation van. Have you ever checked it out when the Eberspacher is running? Small amounts of water could be condensate from the heater or even left over from the burning of diesel.

To clarify, it is a small tube, the width of a biro, and made of a rubber or plastic material.  I wondered if it was the drain for the water heater, but that comes out elsewhere.  Just looked, it is still (very slowly) dripping!

Eber exhaust silencers usually have a small drain tube, could be that? What about the battery drain?

That discounts the Eber exhaust as the Airtop's was metal, flexible, about the diameter of a broom handle. It could still be a condensate drain from the Eber but it would only weep during and just after use, not hours later.

As for a battery drain, surely that's to dissipate any gases that build up, not fluids?

One other thought, have you checked it's not diesel coming out. I had the diesel supply pipe come off my Airtop and it was about that diameter. Of course the heating wouldn't light up 'til I'd secured it back again.

It does sound like the leisure battery vent pipe. If the battery has been replaced it may not have been reconnected.

What is that for if it is from the leisure battery and where is it meant to go. I had one near mine and didn't think it was for anything.

If it is a battery vent pipe, then why is it dripping? They're only meant to vent the gases that can build in a battery as it works. If it isn't connected to the relevant vent hole in the battery then the locker and the van can fill with explosive gases.

Balvenie, do you have a Truma water heater installed in your Topaz?

The Truma has a small breather valve and ventilation pipe associated with the hot water outlet.  Presumably it's some sort of pressure relief system.

The pipe will be connected to the upper water connection on the Truma tank.

Gram, thanks, i think you are right - it is a Truma ultrastore and that tube could easily be related to it.  Why it has recently started seeping water I don't know, but it is very little so I will not worry!

There is a diagram of the Truma installation in the thread linked above.

Try opening the heater drain tap. It's usually yellow and fitted close to and to the rear of the heater at floor level.  This should either confirm or eliminate this possibility.

To avoid any misunderstanding - the water heater doesn't drain from this tube.  It is a breather for the sealed tank.

Yes, it's not the drain tap. The thread that Peter Brown links to above explains it all!  It seems a replacement fitting for about £15 from Ebay will fix it, if it carries on seeping.  Thanks everyone for your help.
