1.9 turbo v 2.5 turbo
Any opinion on which of the above engines is the best,,,i.e. reliability, economy etc. Also is the old 5 speed box mated to the 1.9 or is it the later box? Thanks,,BUSBY65.

So - we have to guess manufacturer and year? I suppose you're referring to VW? AFAIK the 1.9 engine was never fitted with the 6-speed box - I don't know anything about old or new 5-speed boxes. Neither engine is best - one gives better economy, the other is more powerful, and they each have their weaknesses. The 5 cylinder engine is (IMO) the nicest to drive, but it is perhaps unnecessarily complicated.

I would go for the 2.5 as it as more pulling power and about 24-28 mpg depending how you drive.
My 2014 2.2 Peugeot's mpg is between 23 -28 again depends how I drive it, but usually 25mpg.

Avoid the 1.9, 2.5TD is ok but the 2.8 (introduced later in 2000) is even better
