stanton spare wheel - Spare wheel - Stanton Empty Spare wheel - Stanton

I have been looking through thr AS brochure and notice that the "spare wheel carrier with remote pressure point" is not available on the Stanton. Does this mean it doesn't have a spare wheel (or just the pressure point)?

If yours doesn't have a spare wheel how do you cope?

Thanks for the link. I am on my tablet and couldn't find a search facility.

I know most vehicles don't have spares these days but I do seem to find unusual ways of getting punctures so I would prefer to have one. Might just have to stick to the Nuevo.

When I purchased my Devon, it had a cycle rack fitted, but as I don't have a cycle I removed it but the fixing brackets are still on the van. Question one how much does a spare wheel weigh? and, Question two has anyone considered carrying a spare wheel on the rear using the existing cycle rack brackets and if so are spare wheel fixings available? Any comments appreciated.

for me, Question 3 - how much space have you got to park? I have an absolute maximum of 6,1m and a preferred maximum of 6m so anything that increases the length of the van is not possible.

I'm sticking with the Nuevo.

Space to rear of MH no problem, bit tight on width only about 6 inches either side, I had a Nuevo but Peugeot don't do the automatic. The Devon is exactly the same but on a Merc. Sprinter.  Just wondered if it was feasible to fit spare wheel on rear using cycle rack fitting.

I certainly would not put a spare wheel on the cycle rack- even if I could lift it up there!

How could it be safely secured?

Best weigh the van and check what weight you have left.

I have just weighed a spare alloy mercedes wheel and tyre, it was
29 kg. exactly.
Incidentally this wheel is for sale, I bought it as a spare when I had a  Autosleeper Surrey model, I now have a Bourton which came with a spare so I have the other surplus to requirements, it is a genuine Mercedes alloy wheel fitted with a Continental 235/65 R16C tyre, the wheel and tyre have never been used and never been exposed to sunlight as it was always covered and carried in a trailer.
I am looking for £125 for it. Collection from Torquay

The only way to check is to visit a weighbridge

Anthony,
I got our Stanton weighed with full gas and derv tanks, over half tank of fresh water, spare wheel on the back (see photo above in this thread) with two bikes above, all the junk we usually take for three weeks away in cold places (including food/drinks for several days); in fact everything except Mrs T.
We had 1960kg on the back axle + 1340kg on the front = 3300kg. So that leaves exactly 200 kg for Mrs T.  No comment. innocent

It cost £8 to get weighed and took only fifteen minutes, so I'll probably get it done at the start of each "season" just as a handy producer, if we get pulled over for some reason.

Today I was at Willersey for my habitation check.
While waiting I saw some photos on the waiting room notice board of a spare wheel carrier mounted on the back of a Stanton. It was very neat and shaped to fit the rear profile so that the spare sits in the "dent" and fits almost completely under the kitchen window.  It was mounted to the chassis with square section tube disappearing under the van but i could not see if there was any fastening to the back panel. I think it would probably stop a cycle rack being fitted.
It had a label showing that it was made by Watling Engineering who have a good reputation for bespoke towbars. Mark would have all the details I am sure.
Hope this may help somebody with that Stantom problem.

stanton spare wheel - Spare wheel - Stanton Empty Stanton spare wheel

Post by Aldercow Sat May 07, 2016 7:59 am

After looking at the various options members have taken to carry a spare wheel (under seat locker, tow bar mounted) I made a few enquiries as to the best way forward. I approached a well known bespoke motorhome tow bar manufacturer in Dorset. They wanted around £900 to make a tow bar & modify to carry a spare wheel. I felt this was a bit steep. Being an engineer, myself & my RAC friend looked at how the tow bar would attach to the already drilled & sleved holes in the end of the chassis. To cut a long story short I manufactured a mock up full size model in wood which fitted on the van. I then took this mock up to a local metal fabricators & they reproduced it in metal. The carrier ended up at around 28kg in weight & the Merc alloy wheel & tyre another 29kg.
I have fitted this & repositioned the number plate & lamps on a hard plastic wheel cover.
Breakdown of the cost was £90 for the rack to be made, £35 for a hard wheel cover, £10 for number plate lamps, £10 for high tensile mounting bolts & locknuts. So around £145. Then there was £140 for the new Merc alloy wheel & £140 for the Michelin tyre.
I will try to post some photos of the finished article.
Off to Scotland touring for a fortnight now - first main holiday in this new van.
