Toilet door on Nuevo ES Empty Toilet door on Nuevo ES

Post by crisp Fri 11 Sep 2015, 4:22 pm

Has anyone else had a problem with the towel holder fitted to the inside of the toilet door. Mine fell off this week, its quite heavy and the door appears to be hollow at this point. Any suggestions of how to refit without just making holes bigger?

I will presume you mean one of these.

The backplate is fixed with two screws to a roughly 2-3 mm thick skin to the door.

I've been through various screwing and gluing solutions, the final glue one was so good that it pulled the veneer off the door (you will notice from the photo that I've managed to hide the damage).

The first thing to do is make sure the ring is not fixed rigidly, that is achieved by leaving the retaining screw slightly loose but secured with thread lock.

Then slightly relocate the backplate so you can make fresh holes in the door in line with the three holes in the back plate.  Use small plastic wall plugs with a lip to stop them pushing through the surface in the holes in the door.

Tighten the screws till they are secure but don't overtighten.

We have truma heated towel rail in the bathroom so have now stopped using the ring.

Toilet door on Nuevo ES Empty Towel ring alternative

Post by GrahamF Fri 11 Sep 2015, 5:14 pm

Mine also fell off some time back in the same manner and I also puzzled how best to refit on to the hollow door panel. As we never liked the ring style anyway (owes more to fashion than practicality) I decided to make a standard horizontal rail from 3/4 inch dowel mounted by two side pieces on to a plywood base. The plywood base covers up the original mounting hole and allows you to use four fixing screws to spread the load into the hollow door. It was all stained and varnished to look as though it really belonged, and the end result is that your towels dry a lot quicker than scrunched up through the ring. OK it is a bit of work, but what is retirement for anyway!

I did exactly as Peter say's but I put a smear of silicone on the back plate also. Now been solid for nearly 18 months, if you need to remove the back plate remove screws and a sharp blade behind in sawing action will fetch it off with no damage.

Well I got so fed up with mine falling off on my Nuevo that I relocated it on the left wall just inside the door where the wall is much stronger plywood. I covered the holes with the round sticky veneer coloured screw covers which A/S had used on the screws securing the battery cover under the bed which are never on show anyway.

Not had the whole thing fall off but the retaining screw has come loose and the front part has disengaged twice (first time, a week after getting the van).  I've stuck a spring washer on the retaining screw this time but won't hold my breath.

Thank you for your replies and ideas. I certainly think the ring was a bad design, too heavy and GrahamF says not very good at drying. Like the idea of the bar  and the sticky veneer covers will investigate further.

Mine fell off in the first month after purchase of my Devon, it has been repaired now for about two years and is still firm using plastic plugs for hollow wall fixing. Sticky veneer covers available from AS Spares Dept.

Toilet door on Nuevo ES Empty Towel rail falling off toilet door

Post by Organplayer Sun 13 Sep 2015, 8:37 am

I have found immersing a matchstick in wood glue and then inserting this matchstick in the hole, then screwing the fitment back onto the door before the glue sets, always works. So far nothing I have fixed in this way has come off the door/surface  I have employed this little trick on four of our m/hmes and fixing ceiling lights in the bungalow. "Cheap as chips" like wat I iz.
Best wishes everyone.
Eddie.

Bit more upmarket that that Eddie, I use cocktail sticks...
By the way, the toilet door on my 04 Neuvo is solid, the worktops on the other hand....

Same problem with mine. Already used loctite to hold on fitting but now plate coming off the door. I agree it is not a clever design. Like the idea of relocating......up!

I took mine back to A/S in April. The towel ring on the back of the bathroom door was only one of a number of things to be repaired.

Via Mark, A/S covered the existing holes with a strip of self adhesive wood-look tape and relocated the ring to the side of the wardrobe! Does the job much better now and looks right!

Good repair thanks A/S!

Good wishes from us, Barry.
