Seam Sealant - Overcab - 2004 Nuevo
I am sure this has been asked before, but I cannot find the answer.
The sealant between the two halves of the Overcab on my 2004 Nuevo is well past it's sell by date.
Whilst cleaning a few days ago, the sealant at the join of the two fibreglass halves of the overcab was coming away in strips.
What is the best product to reseal the joint with?
I have emailed four dealers / repair shops and not one has replied to me !!
All advice very welcome
Thanks
Graeme

Hi Graeme, I'm sorry to hear about your problems. I would recommend that you contact A/S direct (01386-853511) speak to Mark Burdett who is an extremely helpful chap, and ask him (or his colleague Patrick) what A/S used originally.
Best wishes, Barry.

Have a look at Sikaflex 512

AutoSleepers recommend 'FixAll'
AutoSleepers recommend 'FixAll' classic white sealant.
Anyone tried it ?
Any experience out there ?
Thanks:scratch head:

Re: Seam Sealant - Overcab - 2004 Nuevo
On our '05 model, there is a plastic trim where the two halves meet. There doesn't appear any sealant visible on our van. However, bits of grime and green algae (and possibly some water) gets held in the upfacing seam.
Coincidentally, I was going to post a query about whether the gap could be infilled with any sealant or similar.
Apologies if you feel I'm piggy-backing your post, but it would be interesting to know if there are possibly different methods / versions of joining the two halves together.

Re: Seam Sealant - Overcab - 2004 Nuevo
I concur with Dandywarhol, Sikaflex 512 would be an excellent choice to sort this job out.
I know of a chap who purchased a brand new Nuevo back around 2004/5 and stated that he soon heard water sloshing about in his overcab. It turned out that the top half of the overcab was fitted inside of the bottom half. Therefore, rain, or washing water came down the outside of the overcab, into the joint of the two halves, and straight into the inside of said overcab. I wonder how many four letter words he invented?
Zebede4500, I, for one, have not heard of "FixAll Classic White Sealant". Are you able to specify a manufacturer, please?
Nuevoboy, I have a little experience of sealing application. As an engineering fitter, I would want to fill the cavity all round the plastic trim where the two halves meet, and wipe off the excess that gets squeezed out from the joint, (but this has to be done right at the start). Once "set off" you wouldn't be able to backfill. This way, water cannot get in behind, so fewer chances of leaks, grime or green algae.
Regards and best wishes, Barry.

Stoneb, that overlap fault was the death knell of the Citroën 2 CV. Citroën moved production to Spain laterally and the chassis was a simpler "U" construction. The Spanish factory manufactured it the wrong way round and the chassis rusted through by the first MOT.

FixAll
Thanks for the help.
The two halves of the overcab seem to be connected the right way round; it is just the bead of sealant along the top of the top of the joining strip that is past it! Maybe the sealant was an addition by a previous owner?
It was Auto Sleeper technical that recommended FixAll and said that is what they use.
It can be found with the wonders of Google and they seem to make a 'classic' or 'flexi' sealant in white; as well as clear for glazing and high tack for sticking anything to anything!!
Like Nuevoboy, there is an accumulation of 'gunge' in the seam so I intend to clear everything out and re-seal.
All that's needed now is to make a decision on who's recommendation to follow for the sealer.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks again

Re: Seam Sealant - Overcab - 2004 Nuevo
I did this job not long after purchase of my Nuevo. It does seem a stupid design on this model, the top half fits into an upward facing U shaped slot, much like a gutter. Surely this should be the other way up. Anyway, I removed what I could of the remaining sealant, made sure it was dry as a bone and filled the gap with Dekalin Dekasyl MS-2. This was recommended to me by a professional caravan/motorhome repair shop. Not cheap at £17 or so for a 290ml tube, but nothing good ever is.

Excellent website and certainly looks like a good product.
However, the dekaseal is only available in anthracite, black and light grey.
I'm sure I'd need a white version to get an unobtrusive finish.

Sikaflex does have a very good reputation, not sure what A/S used on mine but whatever it is I shall be avoiding it!

Seems strange that Nuevoboy, I bought white Dekasyl MS-2 no problem. In fact, the supplier only stocked white.

I also use Sikaflex 512. It is an excellent product, very sticky! However from my experience it seems to have a shortish shelf life while still in the tube i.e. it can go hard (cure). When purchasing it from a caravan shop, we like Jacksons of Old Arley, check 'best by dates' on the back, as it's not cheap, around £10+ a tube. Hope this helps.
Pete
P.S. A couple of years go, a local caravan shop near us was selling out of date stock on its shelves!!! Though over the years we have tried to avoid this particular caravan dealer, as their customer care, in our opinion, is a little suspect!

If you do use sikafex 521 let it stand in a bucket of warm water for half an hour and you will find it will come out of sealant gun a lot easier.

Erm, is it 512 or 521, (two scores for each at the moment).

Re: Seam Sealant - Overcab - 2004 Nuevo
Looking at the datasheets, they look to have very similar properties, 512 being a 1-c polyurethane hybrid, 521 being a PUR-Hybrid based on Sika Silane Terminated Polymer Technology. So There.

I thought I had typed the number incorrectly. Must check the number on my stock in the garage!
