Towing Mirrors
Has anyone found a decent clip/clamp on towing mirror for use with the current X250 type door mirrors?
I tried Reich XL mirrors that looked to be OK but didn't like the flimsy fittings and felt they'd end up on the hard shoulder pretty soon.
I only tow a couple of times a year but want to be legal when I do

Re: Towing Mirrors
Do you need towing mirrors?. I thought you only needed them if the thing you are towing was wider than the towing vehicle?

Re: Towing Mirrors
I don`t think I have seen a motor home with towing mirrors on. what about a rear view camera with a 7" monitor.I can see a lot more with that than a rear view mirror/wing mirrors

Re: Towing Mirrors
I think towing mirrors could cause a few few problems width wise on any medium sized van chassis. On the older Boxers there was a choice of mirror arm lengths but not on later models or the X250 etc

Re: Towing Mirrors
Thanks for the feedback.
The trailer I use is enclosed race car transporter (like a caravan without windows). It's 2.3M wide, 5.5M long and 2.3M high whereas my Autosleeper is 2.05 wide (2.5M with mirrors) and only just a bit higher.
It's roughly a 40' rig when paired up.
I have the standard reversing camera however this looks downwards and only has a good view of the tow hitch.
Looking at other forums, I'm not convinced that I have the required field of view as I can only just see the far corners of the trailer if I lean forward in my seat.
I've come across a 'Suck it and See' towing mirror by Pyramid that uses a suction cup, so looks easy to fit & remove when the trailer is safely in the paddock.
Any experience with this type or is there another option that works with the Ducato short stem mirrors?
Cheers

Re: Towing Mirrors
I have been towing racing cars in or on trailers for more years than I care to remember and I have never needed extension mirrors yet. My current race car trailer is only 2.1 mtrs wide but I can see enough of it down the sides of my Fiat Ducato.......

Re: Towing Mirrors
Yes, I have no problem driving the outfit it's only a question of legality - I've read a number of reports that French traffic police are targetting foreigners towing caravans and the like.
If there's not a cheap and easy fix that works, I'll revert to Plan A and plead ignorance if stopped.

Re: Towing Mirrors
I have been dragging my race car all over France for the last 10 years and have never had a problem and I shall be leaving next Wednesday/Thursday and doing the same all over again for 5 or 6 weeks. Lets hope they havent had a change of attitude.....p.s, make sure that you have a hi viz jacket in the car in case you get pulled or that could get you thrown in the Bastille.......

Re: Towing Mirrors
I use suck it and see mirrors on the car. They are pretty good and should keep the outfit looking legal. They have the great advantage that they fit any vehicle and I was fed up with having to buy new mirrors every time we changed car. Mine came from caravan stuff 4u as they were the best price at the time.

Re: Towing Mirrors
Thanks - I think the 'Suck it and see' mirrors are the lesser of the evils. I'll try that supplier you recommended

Re: Towing Mirrors
Hi there,
One of the joys of owning a van (Transit and then Vito) was that I didn't have to mess about with extension mirrors when towing a caravan or (as now) a trailer.
The legal requirements are as follows:
The way I read this is that if I can see down both sides of the item being towed then I am "legal" and don't need extended mirrors.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,

You must have an adequate view of the road behind you. If your caravan or trailer is wider than the rear of the towing vehicle,
you may need to fit suitable towing mirrors.
