Gas cupboard door seal Empty Gas cupboard door seal

Post by RichardB Thu Jul 24, 2014 5:56 pm

Hi all
Just been out in the van sorting it out ready for a weeks holiday (AS Harmony 1999) .
I opened the gas cupboard and there is some black spongy stuff that is stuck on the door frame and with the heat it has all peeled and quite a lot has perished and fallen off.

I am presuming that this is to seal the cupboard to stop gas or whatever escaping.

Can someone confirm that their van also has the black spongy seals before I go out and try to buy some replacements or whether this is something thats been added to mine by the previous owner to stop the door (which has a loose catch) rattling and doesn't need replacing!

Cheers
Richard

Our 1999 Duetto had this sort of seal around the gas locker door.

Thanks all.
When you say very thin could you guesstimate how thin - 1mm, 2mm, 3mm ?

The seal is approx 6mm on the outside face where the door touches by approx 2mm in depth.

Mine's thicker than that - unless it has been replaced by a previous owner?

The seal on mine (original) is just draught excluder foam that you buy from DIY shops. It has a self adhesive backing for sticking to the door frame.
It is about 6mm wide and about 3mm thick.
TBH it is not an 'airtight' seal and I think it is a 'token' gesture to satisfy any regulations at the time.
