Hi,
I have a Renault Trafic 1986 Campervan, I am sure the ignition timing is out and was wondering how you adjust it ? Iam mechanical and know how to use a timing light etc but was wondering if the adjustment is possibe on these vans and if so is it by turning the distributor, if this is the case how do you get at it and is it a pinch bolt etc ?
Cheers,

Jamie.

When you say 1700, do you mean 1647 or 1721?

Hi Frank,

I think it is a 1647 petrol.

If it's a 1647 you can adjust the timing in the normal way by turning the dizzy. You might have to make your own marks on the pulley to use a strobe though.

If its a 1647 then the dizzy is about half way along the cylinder head on the offside. If your dizzy is on the back of the head then you have the 1721 OHC engine which is triggered from a sensor on the flywheel end and the timing cannot be adjusted.

This is why I asked.

Cheers Frank, So I cannot adjust timing :(
Can the sensors become faulty so timing is erratic or do they just simply fail?
If not looks like it will need to go to my local In-tune garage to have carb checked and adjusted etc.

They can become loose or dirty, or the wire can get frayed. You should check the vacuumn pipe from the Renix unit (ignition coil / electronics pack) hasn't come off or been damaged.

Ah ok I will join . I have checked that pipe I believe. The only thing I have noticed is that there is a small rubber pipe on carb that has been plugged with a bolt, looks like this may have originally gone to a diaphram on the carb but this has long gone and back piece of it remains

It should be a single choke downdraught carb - Solex SIEA 35 (?) no diaphragm. Unless someone has changed it.
