Symbol - DAB ANTENNA
Hi All,
I've recently had a Sony DAB Radio fitted. Huge error of judgement in that I got my local Halfords to fit it…I know, I know, it was quick and convenient..big mistake. Anyway, they used one of these internal stick-on antennas, which is rubbish. Any alternative suggestions. I'm thinking probably an external antenna, but where would I put it?

You could try an external glass mounted windscreen antenna which has a self adhesive pad and connects through the glass to the cable. I had two of these with my DAB radios and both worked fine on different makes of cars.

Thanks Rich. Just been looking at one of those. I've also spotted a better quality internal ariel on a t'internet site. The site gives useful info and reviews the different products: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

You could make your own aerial

I decided that a metal ground plane was too difficult in our Exec, so made one of these which works quite well, at least as well as the half wave dipole on our chimney.
I stuck the homemade aerial to the inside of the N/S windscreen with three small suckers and bought the connector from ebay.

That looks very impressive and ingenious, you would have got on well in a WW2 POW Camp…

More to the point - it works as well or better than the commercial offerings.

Has it been fitted properly? It does need good connections to the radio, are all the plugs pushed in firmly?
I fitted a windscreen-mounted Halfords DAB antenna myself and it is fine with my Pure Highway radio.

Having had experience of Transmitting and Receiving Digital Radio (rather than just receiving) from a vehicle with an external glass mounted aerial I would go along with RMLs idea without hesitation.
We have done a comparison with a conventional ground plane aerial and found no difference in quality even in a difficult area

That was our choice in the end. Had the external glass mount fitted last week, plus the original fit re-checked, a marked improvement in signal quality and strength. The work was completed at our storage location, and the increase in channels available was noticeable. Next stage is to get the radio, wired to the leisure battery.
