Cleaning waste water system Empty Cleaning waste water system

Just returned home after a few days at Carsington and we are getting a  slight smell , I think from the waste water tank.  I have flushed it out with fresh water.  Is there a better way to do this on a regular basis to keep it fresh ? Help ! scratch head

Hi JHT,

There has been various posts on here about that very subject and one of the ideas is to buy the cheapest orange squash that Tesco's can supply (other supermarkets are available).   hugegrins   Then put a generous glug down he plug hole and that keeps it smelling sweet.
We are new to this motorhome lark but have done that from the off and not noticed any bad smell.  At least not yet.
Hope this helps.

Given that longer-lasting smells usually come because solids are trapped in a lining of grease in the tank then you need to remove that grease. One good way to do this is by filling your tank with a solution of biological laundry liquid mixed with warm water. If you can then drive round a little before emptying then this washes the inside of the tank.

At the end of each trip I get rid of our fresh water ( which we can't empty in storage)  by running it into the empty waste tank with a good dollop of Tesco's cheapest biological laundry liquid ( 2 caps). We then drive home and empty the tank. Two things to be careful about: use warm - not hot- water or you destroy the enzymes in the liquid that digest the grease and use laundry liquid not powder as the powder tends not to fully dissolve and will bung up any sensing devices in your tank.

When you are using your tank try to avoid putting water that has been used to boil eggs, rice or pasta into it. That starts to smell quite quickly !  It also helps if you wipe off any food waste before washing up with a bit of kitchen roll. We don't always stick to this but it does improve the quality of the waste water when we do !

A couple of times a year I put a dollop of Soda crystals over the plugholes and flush through with very hot water. Do that a couple of times, leave in the waste tank for a bit, jiggle the van around on the drive for a bit and then drain out.
Keeps the tank and pipes nice and clean.
