Disconnect or not
The main battery needs re charging but looks pretty complicated (to me) to disconnect. Can I recharge it without disconnecting using my trickle charger overnight?

Ditto.
If you are connecting a separate battery charger, then I suggest connecting the charger to the battery before plugging it into the mains (reduces the risk of sparks and surges).
