Olive Oyle.........
This is just ridiculous - I am pop eyed about it.......... Soon to be gone are the days when you go go to a restaurant and sit and dip bread in oil/balsamic mix poured from a jug or two. Now from January 1st 2014, all olive oil has to be served in sealed, tamper proof bottles because a bunch of idiots, unaccountable to anyone except themselves, have decided that it avoids counterfeiting and is an aid to public safety
You can bet your bottom dollar that the French/Spanish/Greeks/Italians will simply ignore it, whilst the UK will send food inspectors all around on overtime to catch the poor restaurant owner..... I am absolutely mad about this. Our weak government does not agree but will simply roll over and accept it.

Re: Olive Oyle.........
Hi there,
I am all for safety but in this case I sit here weeping gently!
Helen has always gone "Eugh!" at the sight of me dipping bread into a saucer of olive oil and eating it with a dash of salt and pepper at breakfast; but she would always defend my right to do it!
The thought of having olive oil served up in sachets sends shudders down my spine. I just know that, like the contents of all the other sachets found in low-cost cafés and restaurants, it will be a sub-standard product marketed for economy rather than flavour!
I sincerely hope that every hotel, café and restaurant in France ignores the rule so that we can at least have one haven where we can enjoy both taste and sanity!
Best regards,
Ian
PS Just thought. What happens to all those home-made flavoured concoctions that we find in the small eateries on the Continent? The ones that are flavoured with chillies, fennel seeds, fennel tops, dill etc etc etc by the proprietor; and then served with pride so that you can pour it over your food or use it as a dip.
I think the phrase "May they rot in hell!" applies to whoever thought up this nightmare!

A small grain of common sense. I think they realised that it would be almost unenforceable. Looks like we are the only two on here passionate about our Olive oil, Ian

Re: Olive Oyle.........
Hiya,
I read the Post out to our grandson and his wife and to prove my point of how delicious it was I got out a small bowl of virgin olive oil with a spoonful of balsamic vinegar in the bottom and a few cubes of crusty bread to dip in and try.
Uneducated peasants that they are they declared that they preferred bread and butter!!!
I wash my hands of them and will probably change their status in our "Last Will and Testament" so that they have to consume at least ten litres of Olive Oil before inheriting anything else!
Best regards,
PS By the way, it wasn't wasted! But the diet is ruined for today!

Hi Ian.
Just a thought. Talking about wills and things.
With all of the olive oil you have consumed over the years.
Come your passing your remains should be preserved for eternity.
However if its a visit to the crem.
Wow. Thats gonna be some beacon in Skeggy.
And thats not taking into account all of your other consumed flammable liquids.
Whisky.
There you go then. The kettle calling the pot black Ar ?

but relevant to last Post so .....
Having organised a couple of funerals lately we were aghast at the costs!! (More than £3,500 in each case!)
So we actually went to the Crematorium at Alford last September to find out what the simplest (and cheapest) option was and discovered that we can turn up in "Petal" with a body on a board and get it cremated for £450 as long as we have the right paperwork!
Imagine the party everyone can have with the £3,000 that has been saved! (Board and Body Bag = £50) I will be sorry to not be there!!
Best regards,
PS
We have already donated our bodies to Leicester University. They pick you up and dispose of you for free but they have a list of terminal ailments that mean they might not accept your body (e.g. if you died of rabies or other similar infectious disease!) so we thought we would check out other options.
"Natural Burial" is £400 for the plot + £125 for the digger to dig and re-fill the hole + £100 for a cardboard coffin. So much for "just stick 'em in the ground"!
