Decisions, decisions
Hello Autohomers,
Unfortunately I cannot, as yet, class myself as one of you. Perhaps you can help me.
We have been looking for campervan/motorhome for 2 years now, we started out by considering a t2 (I used to convert them some 25 years ago) we then moved on to t25's and have since looked at everything from Romahome's to big Autotrails, alas without any success. We have finally settled on a T4 Autosleeper Trident of Trooper of the 2000 era. Can you help us decide which one to go for, high top or pop top, petrol or diesel, 1.9 or 2.5. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read.

Hi Rodders
Welcome to the forum.
We have trodden a very similar path to yours with T2s, T3s, T4s & T5s. In my experience you won't find a more reliable base vehicle for a motorhome than the T4 / T5. A T4 Trooper or Trident is a good choice. Engine wise go for a diesel. The 2.5TDI 88bhp (blue I on TDI badge) or 102bhp (silver I on TDI badge) are the flagship of the range and have best torque, reliability, yet still have excellent fuel consumption. The 2.4D is very smooth but lacks torque which can be a problem whem hill climping and overtaking.
There is a good selection of vehicles of the age you are thinking about. Good luck with your search.

Re: Decisions, decisions
Pop top may be a bit more limiting than the high top, my parents had a pop top for a season then changed it as it didnt suit their needs

Re: Decisions, decisions
Hi Rodders and welcome to the Forum. I have a Trident on a VW T4 (2.5, 88hp). In its class, ie: a campervan rather than a motorhome, it must be one of the best, if not the best on the market. I think the prices of pre-owned vehicles demonstrate just how much people have regard for these vehicles. We have toured extensively throughout the UK, the Irish Republic and France and Belgium and had no probs whatsoever. One word of caution, make sure there is a service history with any vehicle you may consider purchasing, particularly in respect of establishing that the cam and diesel pump belts have been changed at the recommended intervals. This should also include the water pump and tensioners. Any failings in this area can be fatal as far as the engine is concerned. Best of luck with your search.

Re: Decisions, decisions
Thankyou all for such a warm welcome and for the words of wisdom.
My wife is rather keen to go down the Trooper route as she believe's the pop top version can be more useful as an everyday vehicle, she is also wary of fuel economy, and from your comments I would guess that the 1.9TD is not the unit of choice..
Troopers, it would appear though, are not as readily available as Tridents and are, in my opinion, not as pleasing on the eye. I can foresee a few interesting months ahead of us!!
Thankyou again for taking the time to respond to my first post. Hers's to a happy Autohome resolution.
