Yes - at a minimum you should run it briefly with tank empty. There are products out there that will help you drain out the whole system, but I don't bother - a small residual amount ~shouldn't~ cause damage if it has space to expand into if it freezes.

Of course you ~must~ drain the water heater down.

Hi Caroline,

You should also leave the sink/ shower taps open, as in theory the tap to drain the tank is at the bottom, but if you do not open the taps at the top, it can cause a vacuum, and keep water in the pipes which can freeze. Don't forget to empty the waste tank as well.

Hi there,

I also "blow through" the pipes by literally blowing down the pipe in the bathroom with the other hot and then cold taps open. Amazing how much water there is in there!

Also, at this time of year every field mouse in the country is looking for winter digs so keep an eye out for them! allthumbz

Best regards,

Didn't drain my heater properly last year. Burst heat exchanger and distorted diaphragm housing. I did it properly and early this year!
