SAT NAV Empty SAT NAV

Post by Jamesy47 Thu Oct 10, 2024 12:05 am

Hello,

I recently purchased a 2012 Auto-sleeper Cotswold and am looking to upgrade the radio to include SAT Nav, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and Apple CarPlay, if possible. Can anyone provide any recommendations?

Welcome to the forum, Jamesy. Sorry I can’t help with your question.

For future info, please don’t duplicate your discussion threads as it leads to confusion and lack of continuity.

Enjoy your new van!

I know this probably isn't something you want to hear as a new owner, but you won't find A/S helpful on a subject like this. The headunit/radio is considered by them to be part of the base vehicle, supplied from the factory by Peugeot, so anything to do with it is outside of their remit.

I guess a lot depends on whether you want to do a DIY install and are happy to do a bit of work. If you just want a solution fitted, probably the best bet is to go to a local car radio shop and see what they recommend, and see how it fits your budget. Those of us here that have gone down the cheap Chinese headunit route will know that it's not always a good way to go! Though it's typically not quite as bad as it used to be (a typical tactic used to be that you had to return the headunit by registered/tracked post to China if you wanted it seen to under "warranty"!).

Hi Roopert do you think it would be useful to contact Peugeot to see if they have any solutions?

Sorry - no. IMO it's unlikely. Peugeot probably don't care too much what you do with it after you've bought it. Few manufacturers seem to be interested in selling options for retro-fit to a vehicle after it's been sold new.

I would start by looking around Halfrauds to get an idea of what's available and then going online to see what vehicle audio specialists in your area recommend.

Just a further thought, built in Sat nav can be expensive especially for map updates, speed cameras and also difficult to update, you might do better with a stand alone product

I know how you feel, mine has a built in Sat nav but it is only a car version and the maps are already out of date, I use it occasionally because it is convenient, it takes longer to start up when you come to use it.

it is only a small screen in my case and rather dull, I sometimes use my old tom tom stand alone unit about the same size but brighter and up to date (lifetime maps) I have an old tablet (10 inch) that I might start using with either Google maps or Waze, both free to use.

My thoughts exactly. In both my car and van I use premium model Tom Tom portable sat nav’s, which are much better in many ways, e.g. for traffic news, accurate speed over the ground etc. than integrated units. I just replace them after five or six years when they are no longer supported, which can be cheaper than updating.

I don’t know what radio unit you have. Our 2019 Boxer radio is pretty average, but good enough for my Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra tastes, and for limited hands free phone use since I always avoid anything but the simplest conversation when driving. If my wife wants music she just seems to plug her iPhone in. It depends what your priorities are really but fine music quality seems a bit OTT in a van!

Hi Bargee,

I don't have the hearing for fine music or the eye sight for 4k viewing and to be honest, when I have listened and viewed either of the above I can't say I have noticed the difference lol

James,

I think you have had the best advice.  With a 12 year old van neither AS or Peugeot are going to be interested.

You have 2 options - a standalone like an Avtex tourer screen (cheaper), or a new head unit (more expensive).  Go to Halfords or your local vehicle audio centre and see what the options and costs are.  That's what I would do.

Good luck.

Funnily enough I asked my wife last night “why do we have a Mega HD 55” Dolby whotsit TV when all we seem to watch is old fuzzy (Foggy?) episodes of Last of the Summer Wine and The Sweeney?”

Cathode rays weren’t all bad!

Err, beg to disagree.....but I'm in awe of the advances in picture and sound of modern TVs. We have an HD TV with 5.1 surround sound from a Denon avr amplifier and when watching via an Amazon fire stick it's a truly immersive experience.  But each to their own.

Perhaps I should have added an emoji! Yes of course TV’s are much better now, particularly when viewed via the internet. Just seems a shame that my wife prefers the old programmes!
