Just saying Hi ...
Apologies folks, I should have introduced us properly here before diving into another topic with a question.
My lovely wife and I are (hopefully) about to become the proud owners of a 2003 Topaz which we’re viewing in a week’s time. Having talked at length to both the owner and the mechanic who has always looked after the van (it’s a 3 hour drive away from where we live in the Midlands) it’s pretty well a given that we’ll be driving it away next weekend.
We’ve caravanned for 30 years or more and bought our first motorhome (a Bentley Indigo) in 2015. A change in family circumstances last year saw us sell the Bentley as we weren’t able to use it as much as we did when we first had it. However, we’ve missed our impromptu weekends away so wifey suggested we get something smaller which we could keep at home rather than at the storage compound. A van conversion seemed to fit the bill.
We initially looked at a lovely 1994 Trophy but as we’d only just begun researching which van to go for, we got cold feet and it slipped through our fingers. We then moved onto the Duetto/Symbol (as the layout is similar to the Indigo) but struggled to find any with decent MOT histories in our price bracket. As the VW based vans seem to be less prone to corrosion, we swung back to the T4 and many hours of research later we were rewarded.
So here we are, looking forward to many new adventures in the UK and further afield. I’ve no doubt there’ll be questions we’ll need some help with and we’ll try to add our own input if we feel we can help in return as we become more experienced.
This does seem to be a very supportive and upbeat community, so thanks for allowing us to join y’all!

Hi Mr Grey! Topaz is a great buy. We’ve owned a range of AS vehicles - some older, some even newer, but our ‘52’ T4 Topaz has served us best! As a testament to its quality note that AS carried on the design in later base VW models….
