Van lifers. Empty Van lifers.

Post by bikeralw Mon Aug 08, 2022 9:13 am

I recently had family from NZ staying over, and took the grandchildren around some of the local beauty spots, one of which being the Mam Tor area, and Castleton in the Hope Valley. Now I know each end of the old slipped road is a popular stop over for van lifers, but I was taken aback by how many there were, at least 20 dubious van conversions at the top end, which blocked all views and parking places for the many day tripping tourists who drove down and had to turn back and find somewhere else to park.
Plus at least as many vans again at the side of the road down in the valley.
It was obvious by the detritus around that most of these vans were staying for more than the one night.
I overheard several tourists and walkers complaining that the whole area resembled a traveller's site.
Judging by the amount of video cameras around It seems most of these van lifers make their living by posting vlogs about their lives on to youtube. I've watched a few of these videos and they're extremely boring, the Monty Python sketch featuring umpteen Alan Whickers reporting from the same small island springs to mind...
Talking to a friend who lives in the valley, he says there have been hundreds of complaints and he's hoping the town council will bring in rules banning overnighting in the near future.

Same scenes repeated around the country Al, especially on the coasts, Stonehaven, Rosemarkie had a minimum of 8 vans parked up nose to nose most days and nights denying locals and trippers spaces to park .

The law of unintended consequences...

Lock people up for 2 years, they'll want freedom.
Make foreign travel more expensive / inconvenient, they'll holiday at home.
Make home ownership / energy bills unaffordable, they'll live in a van.
Make work unattractive / inaccessible, they'll make a living online.

The knock-on effects of the Covid era are just getting started. Hopefully the pushback against vans in tourist areas will result in more investment in campsites and pub stops and we'll benefit that way.

Our recent stay at Berwick was an eye opener. We ventured up onto the NE coast path for a little look, there was a German registered VW camper parked in very hard to get to location. I agree with all the comments here, some folk are taking the proverbial Michael and they will inevitably spoil it for everyone else.
