New Owner What Insurance Company
Hi
I need to insure my Kingham, anyone recommend a good policy that will pay new for old if stolen ? Looking at Comfort and Caravan Guard.
Lots of companies and lot of negative reviews, its a nightmare....
Thanks

Re: New Owner What Insurance Company
Generally, you will only get 'new for old', as with cars, if the MH is less than a year old. After that its indemnity (i.e. market value) only under your standard motor policy. (There are specialist products out that that will cover the gap between market value and new for old but at a price and they tend to be issued by companies at the low reputation end of the market rather than mainstream insurers so I steer clear).
I'm with Comfort. They administer policies for Aviva, a company with nationwide reach. The policy seemed reasonable for the cover it provided and at a reasonable price against some insurers who quoted me well over a thousand. That said, the true test of any insurance company comes when you've had a prang and its time to cough up for repairs - quickly - especially if you're away from home. Unfortunately, I have no experience of making a MH claim so cannot help you there.

2 years ago my fairford got hit whilst I was stopped to let a truck past, on a country road. There was a criminal case as a result and it went to court. I was insured with SAGA, but claimfast handled everything.....they were great! It was a difficult process, but I can honestly say they were great . I’ve re insured with them.

Me also, last 15 years, no problems, may not be the cheapest but as they say "you get what you pay for" Both car and van.Lorfal wrote:2 years ago my fairford got hit whilst I was stopped to let a truck past, on a country road. Someone hit my caravan when I had it and Saga were very good.

Re: New Owner What Insurance Company
Glad to hear you had good service from Saga. But who were the actual insurers who authorised repairs and footed the bill? It is they and their repair networks, at the end of the day, upon whom motorists rely to get their vehicles back on the road.
As to Claimfast, they are a credit hire firm. Whilst I have not had dealings with this particular outfit, credit hire companies and their sharp practices have pushed premia up for all of us.
As rgermain says, you get what you pay for and that is as true in insurance as elsewhere and why I'd never recommend going with the cheapest quote.

I think that NFU is an insurer, operating via tied agencies. They have an excellent reputation (see Which?) but are not cheap. They offer an annual Mutual Bonus which helps reduce premia.
I insure all vehicles, house and contents with them, and have for many years, although I test the market annually - though it's impossible to quantify the quality aspect, other than anecdotally.

We, too, use NFU Mutual for car and MH. It includes breakdown cover for vehicles up to 5m/3500kg. Fortunately, this van just squeezes into that bracket.
I had reason to claim on the car policy and couldn’t fault the company in any way.
I like the old fashioned approach they have with a local office staffed by real people who I can go and see if necessary.

My documents state that the limits for a motorhome are up to 5.5m long / 3500kg, so my Nuevo, with its bike rack, falls just outside that length limit - it's 5.7m. So I have separate recovery insurance, with GEM mutual.Tinwheeler wrote:We, too, use NFU Mutual for car and MH. It includes breakdown cover for vehicles up to 5m/3500kg. Whatever, it has allowed us to cancel our RAC policy as the NFU one is upgradeable to give a more comprehensive cover for only a few quid a year.

Rather than recommend an insurer, I will give a recommendation as to who to avoid - any broker who puts you with Equity Red Star. One of the two main clubs used to use them exclusively but not any more. From experience they also use claims management company who are appalling.

Re: New Owner What Insurance Company
Just a thought whilst reading this thread: how many of you carry insurance documents with you when travelling in your MH? I've covered some 3,500 miles this year and I've just realised, when away from home, I didn't have policy numbers or contact details with me in the event of an incident requiring immediate assistance. I've now remedied this by transferring information to my phome but who else travels without?

Photocopy of Certificates m MOT and V5C in each vehicle; full scan .pdf of all current insurance documents accessible via mobile or similar device. A bit OTT but that's me!

The ins cert plus a bank statement and utility bill in case of need to hire a car, or similar event, when proof of ID might be required.

Always carry a copy of insurance, I am with Just Campers and found them excellent from English on the telephones a very good price, my Husband has just changed from Caravan Guard as he wasn`t happy with them, big jump in renewal, Just Campers offered him more for a lot less. a discount if you are a member of a club, like CC / CMHC

Regarding having policy details with you when travelling………..I have insurance and breakdown through saga .Setting up a my saga account on line is straight forward and can access all details on phone.
Incidentally I went with saga when first brought my van as they agreed to mirror my max no claims on car policy which made a difference I could not better at the time.

Same here, have found Saga very good over the years, not the cheapest, but.Kdc wrote:Regarding having policy details with you when travelling………..I have insurance and breakdown through saga .Setting up a my saga account on line is straight forward and can access all details on phone.
