As I said, many routes across the country are created by a charity organisation, Sustrans.
I just hope the tax you pay, like mine, helps to create safe cycle routes, for children as well as adults, this would then appease all disgruntled motorists.
I said there was a large increase in the number of cyclists following the Olympics ... national cycle sales following Chris Hoy’s excellent performance would support this.

Re: Cyclists
It is interesting the views of some motorists towards cyclists, it is similar to the views of many towards Motorhomes and caravans! It seems to say a lot about the growing intolerance of people in this country.

‘It seems to say a lot about the growing intolerance of people in this country.’
For me this comment just about sums it all up.
I feel the past 18 months has accelerated me into a new age of intolerance, aggression, impatience and self serving ingratitude.
How many more (are they nouns? ) can I add? Probably quite a few.

Re: Cyclists
This was what I was referring to in my previous post on this. I have nothing but respect for cyclists either alone or in groups of two or three, I just bide my time and pass when it's safe for all concerned to do so.Dbvwt wrote: I’m also a keen cyclist but like you have noticed an increasing number of recent novice and (more infuriating) club cyclists who don’t give a hoot about other road users, primarily cars.
However the cycle clubs that go out on public roads en-masse and use them as time trial routes etc are a growing problem for other road users.

I have to agree with the 2 comments above.
I’ve cycled the Monsal Trail in the Peak District today, a lovely 18 mile round trip with some absolutely fantastic scenery/history along the route.
However… it was carnage out there at times! Cyclists and walkers alike, there was so much inconsiderate behaviour it was quite shocking.
And not a car driver in sight

Is that the Monsal viaduct ? I’m sure that’s were we used to practice SRT ( single rope technique ) to descend and ascend the many Cave systems in the area.

Correct, although you wouldn’t get me going over the top of the railings!
Also I couldn’t believe how cold those tunnels are inside, they didn’t tell you that on Countryfile

Many years ago, before they were bricked up for the next 30 years, and not long after the rails were removed, for a dare I walked through the longest of those tunnels without a torch, and in the pitch darkness at the centre of a curve I fell into a brick inspection pit... I still have the scars..

Park House camping Monsal Head Roger.
A few bad reviews online but nothing but praise from me. Maureen and Peter very friendly, a basic site but at £9 (just me) with no need for facilities, perfect.
And I haven’t heard a single crow!

Cycled it earlier this year, when staying at Buxton. Really enjoyable. The trail is an example of what can be done.

Re: Cyclists
A person I've known for many years who commutes a fair distance for her work recently found out I drove a motorhome, she then let fly about blimmin camper vans holding up the traffic everywhere, getting lost and turning around, taking up more than one pump on a forecourt, clogging up the lanes in Devon and Cornwall and what do you do with your waste water she asked. We're still friends but we see each other in a different light - I didn't have the courage to tell her I also cycle

As an ex-club cyclist that was going to be my response too.Weegie wrote:BobK wrote:How many times have you seen a cyclist on the roadway cycling along parallel to a dedicated, signposted cycle/pedestrian share pavement It seems its beneath them to use a cycle lane.
In addition to what others have said about this, I'll offer the following.
In Glasgow, one of our main East / West arteries has one of your dedicated cycle paths. However, every week, the road sweeper machines come along and their swirling brushes clear all manner of rubbish off the road. However, a substantial proportion of that rubbish ends up in the cycle lane - litter, rocks, broken glass, you name it. But you can't see that from a vehicle - all you can see is a cyclist on the road beside a cycle lane.
If I could use the cycle lane without having to repair a puncture every 50 yards, I would.

Re: Cyclists
In the very near future most cars will be EVs and when this happens the money the Gov gets from fuel tax will plummet. They will then have to raise money to maintain our road infrastructure through increased road tax for all including those with EVs. That said I can't see this extending to pedal bikes and nor should it as they cause no damage to the road.groundhog wrote:I don't think anyone should pay road tax. Just put another few pence tax on fuel and scrap the whole wasteful system.
Bikes can go for free then and electric milk floats.

Re: Cyclists
I'm a relatively slow driver and nearly always have been as it saves fuel and money. If I have to slow down further because of a tractor or cyclist, providing I'm not forced to brake and don't accelerate hard to get past, it will save more. It will take a little longer to get to my destination but so what.
I am also a cyclist but I only cycle off-road and on quiet country roads and never two a breast. I wish more cyclists would do the same.

Re: Cyclists
I had somebody blast past me just after one set of lights presumably because I didn’t pull away fast enough. My lane was shorter at the next set so ended up alongside him.
My lane’s light went green 1st so as I pulled away I waved to him, I looked back in the mirror to see something being said and his partner giving him a clout
The trouble is everyone is in a hurry even when there is no actual need to be. Since having the electric car I don’t go quite so fast but still arrive within a minute or two of the sat nav predicted time.

During almost every journey some impatient pillock will zoom past, only for you to draw up immediately behind him (or her - we must be properly PC!! ) at the next junction or traffic lights.
I sometimes give a little toot and a wave, but I doubt if the idiots understand!
