smashed cap Empty smashed cap

Post by Sapper Thu May 27, 2021 8:41 am

Morning all, Like a tw@t I put my outside fresh water fill cap on the wheel whilst I filled up our WXL three guesses what happened when I drove off. twiddle_thumbs

Result is, I need a new one and it seems it's possible to buy one without the lock barrel which means using your old one. I guess that's not really a problem with mine because I could just break it out, but if that wasn't the case, how would I get it out? That also begs the question, is it likely to be difficult to get my barrel back into the new blank cap?

Appreciate any advice, thanks. up!

Hi Sapper

Your dealer will have a special key that releases the lock barrel from its housing in the cap.

The same key will be required to fit the new lock, so take both old lock and new cap to get the barrel swapped.

We’ve just bought a new water fill cap with two keys from Amazon. The lugs on the inside of the old one had broken off over time.
Seems fine...

I lost two by resting them on the bike rack. Don’t carry bikes so I removed the rack and bought a new filler cap last time. Rather than trying to change the barrel I have one key for the filler and one for the rest of the locks.

Is it just me, am I totally out of touch with todays prices? confused3

Re my smashed filler cap, I rang my dealer to ask how much they would charge to change the lock barrel if I bought a new AS cap. The answer was, oh not much at all it would only take a few minutes I guess about £25. shrugg  WHAT

The filler cap from Amazon does not need the anything changing. £13.70 was a good price for a quick and easy fix.

I suggest that you tie a piece of string to a spare water filler cap, and tie the other end to (say) the inside of an outside locker (mines tied to the inside of the lock lever). So to open the filler, open your locker, take out the key on string, and open the filler cap. With the key still in the cap, put the cap temporarily in the locker. After filling, if you drive off without refitting, you won't lose the cap.

Hi, why not just keep the water cap key on the ignition key ring?

Hi Bev

Many thanks for info on Amazon Vecam cap.

My existing cap has been driving me to distraction ever since Autosleepers installed it a few years ago. Tried everything to improve it without success. Decided to take a punt following your advice. Fits perfectly and opens every time. Happy bunny.

Regards Graham
