Replacing the drain pipe. Empty Replacing the drain pipe.

Post by AutoSleepy_Don Sat Mar 20, 2021 6:00 pm

Last year the drain pipe for my waste tank broke. I think this is quite a common event but I haven't seen any one have the struggle I am having.

In the AS spare parts catalogue, all the parts are listed as 28mm diameter (image below). I still have the tap and the reducer so I thought I only needed a replacement 28mm pipe.
AS parts can't supply so I got a 28mm convoluted grey hose from ebay.
But it seems the pipe fitted by AS is 26mm and stretched to fit the 28mm nozzle at the tank.

I measured the reducer and it is 28mm one (tap) side and 26mm the other side that fits the pipe.

Is my van a one off?

NB measurements taken with a digital caliper.

All the local dealers are closed until the 12th April or I could have gone to one of them.
I plan to get another pipe but this time a 26mm.

As I believe many others will have completed this repair without issue,
am I missing something here?

Fortunately I've not dislodged or broken mine ... yet. But inevitably it will happen (especially now that I've written this!) and so I'm grateful to you for opening this thread, which I'll follow with interest.

I think I’ve understood your post in that you want to build up the 26mm to 28mm. In which case this will do the job if you can’t find the correct fitting.
Apologies if I’ve completely misunderstood smile!

I've replaced my pipe in the past and its definitely 26mm (1 inch) . You can get the original blue or grey pipe from CakTanks who supply AS. Or if desperate you can get black pipe from garden centres as they stock it for garden pond pumps. Caravan dealers shops tend to only stock the 28mm as that's a common size on caravans.

I changed mine for straight through 22mm plumber tap reduced with 28 MM copper fitting, I can now add a waste pipe to it if on pitch which offers it

Glynn lock mentioned an elbow at the tank, my van has an elbow at the tank with a reducer which  the pipe goes straight onto.

if you look you will then have the reducer as in the picture don has shown then the pipe. the reducer will be hard to see as it goes inside the elbow and the pipe

Don
to use the 28mm pipe you have already  got that will go direct to the tank and the tap you need a short piece of 28mm plastic waste pipe that will fit inside the tap and the 28mm new pipe  will fit onto the pipe

I needed to replace the water tank drain on my Warwick XL and all the fittings seemed to be different sizes. My replacement 28mm corrugated pipe was too large for the tank spigot so a sleeve was needed. After much searching around I found something that was ‘exactly right’ ....[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Do vans with elbows have the waste tank exit towards the side or the rear?   (Mine is towards the rear)

Yes I have seen the 90 degree elbows on sale that incorporate a 28mm to 26mm reducer. I wish I had the chance to inspect some other AS PVCs on a dealers forecourt.

Well I have done it :-)
Not fast and I have only done a like for like replacement but that's because I dont know what I'm doing.

The waste pipe actually has an internal diameter of 26mm or 1 inch despite AS calling it a 28mm, maybe AS are measuring the external diameter or the parts dept .......
It is hard to get the pipe onto the waste tank protruberance because that is 28mm (external) and you are working one handed under the van. I got it half on yesterday afternoon then let it stretch overnight and finished it today after the end had expanded.

Maybe the 90 degree elbow that seems to be fitted to some vans incorporates a 28mm to 26mm reducer because I have seen such elbows for sale. If I had known for certain then I would have ordered an elbow reducer when I got the pipe.

PS Your van may have different measurements, mine may be a parts bin special.

Van is ready for the 12th April now.

well done with your fix Don. All we need now is someone to give us all a "link" to a supplier who sells nice "real" stainless steel tool clips that those hoses clip into on the underside of our vans.
Size? etc. The original ones are rubbish and look rubbish " inappropriate word" removed.
Anyone ?

Thanks Paul, when I can finally go up to "see" my van in storage on Monday I'll get the tape measure out.
Just thought someone might know the size already?
oh yes! silly me . outside diameter pipe is 28mm , should have read that.
now what's 28mm in "old money"?
Ps thanks Paul for calling them their real name "Terry clips" so I can google them:up!:

Have had to replace mine, pipe failed due to constant flexing when unclipped to empty. Lasted nearly 18 months from new. Putting the end of the pipe into a jug of hot water will ease fitting to the connectors

My van is a 2010 so maybe they've  changed since but mine split due to flexing right by the tank , 25mm pipe slipped straight on tightened with jubilee clip., no reducer required.

it looks like the actual waste exit is 90 deg to how it should be, it seems to be pointing back inwards, towards the centre of the van, rather than downwards??
to direct this into a container, even when unclipped, wouldnt it need to be 'twisted' to point down, this would put strain on the hose or on the joint unless there is some rotation allowed in the tap somewhere?
also, how its clipped (up tight to the bodywork) the tap cant be opened in situ, which would be useful (slide container under) provided the tap was pointing downwards.

Don
This is the pipe removed from my van as I said an adapter each end and tap one end and a elbow  to the tank the other
I have fitted a auto drain valve and used the tap with solid pipe as can be seen on my kemerton xl improvement post[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

When I got mine from AS it was simply a metre cut off a roll, no plain end fittings like your photo.

I said this is removed from my van I now have solid pipe and a auto drain valve so yes you would get just a meter of pipe as you did
