I agree with you there j, but we have the telly to blame for most, due to the large amount of cheap American programmes (not programs) the tv companies buy.

An Americanism that particularly annoys me is, we no longer serve food we 'plate it up' -and this is from a country that thinks it invented take away!

Why use one word when 3 will do? shrugg

Don't get me started on coffee shops. My OH won't let me near the counter since the day we were in a glass and chrome place where I kept asking for a white coffee not a 'latte' whatever that is... I now have to find a table and stay out of the way.

Yes Brian,

There must be some under lying reason why they dont use, 'black out', but then they also use 'gas' to mean petrol.

Trunk, hood, fender used on 'autos' make me smile, as does RV for motorhome!

For 'crissake' learn to speak English 'proper'. snigger

Slightly off topic, but for a laugh, I once wrote out a service/ delap. report grossly rongly spelt.

However it sort of backfired on me, nobody noticed. (Or maybe they were just being Kind) Whistle1

Yes lets keep "T.G.O.M.Club" going, no end of subjects to be covered!

Americanisms Empty Life's like that...

Post by RML Wed Jun 20, 2012 4:18 pm

Have you ever, like me, accidently turned the cold tap on full only to discover a tea spoon in the basin that soaks you before you can turn the tap off ... where do these spoons come from?

...and you finish up looking like a refugee from a wet tee shirt contest.

I'm my own worst enemy, I leave spoons in the sink and..... well this is where we came in!

I thought a "brown-out" referred to a power drop that caused a diminution of the lighting (hence browning it out) rather than a full-on "outage".

And I don't think there is such a thing as "world series football". World series baseball on the other hand produces a "World Champion" team, as does the Superbowl in American Football (which has very little foot-to-ball contact beyond the kick-off, goal kick and "punt"), but only American teams compete.

Go figure!!
