"A large amount of people are ignoring the lock-down rules"

NO !!!

It's " A large number of people....."

If you can count something then use  "number". If you can't count them then it's " amount"

On the occasions that I watch the Coronavirus Press Conference I now switch off before the likes of  Kunnesberg and the rest of the dross start asking the same stupid silly questions most of which has just been stated at the news conference.

Let’s have the dailyconference and do without the press bun fight afterwards

The next panic will be a run on panic buying of UK grown fresh fruit and veg as a number of news reports are saying the is a shortage of the normal East Europeans fruit and veg pickers.

I’ve noticed the press have started probing more with their questions along the lines of "The Govt promised so why hasn't it happened?". I’ve heard a few questions that I’d have liked to ask. The answers though leave much to be desired.

Roger you are right. It’s the smart Alec, sneering gotcha questions that I object to. The job the ministers have is overwhelming 24/7 without cheap snipes from the wings. I would not like to do it!

Well said!

And if it's a number rather than an amount then a reduction would be "fewer", not "less".

A fairly recent introduction annoys me and that's the prefacing of a series episode with a summary of what's gone before. Granted there may be a few souls with a tiny memory span and a few that watch a series from the middle, but surely the great majority of the audience remember previous episodes, that's why they dipping in again. These summaries are even coming after each ad break on some programmes. Madness.

I watched the recent series of Picard via Amazon and whilst it had the annoying summary on each episode, it also had a facility to move forward and avoid it. That indicates to me that the makers are aware how annoying the summary is. Trouble is, you can't do that with broadcast TV.

SWMBO looks to see if anything is a two part and if so simply waits for the second due to the same thing

I would be happy if that obnoxious sidekick of hers wore a bucket on his head  Whistle1

On the grumpy scale, I must be getting close to the highest of numbers. Being confined to barracks has meant watching a little more TV than usual as a way of getting some light relief. The BBC appears to have turned itself into the Covid19 channel with wall to wall repeats of the same stories over and over again. They (and the other channels) think it's ok the muck about with the schedules at a moments notice, my poor HDR doesn't know whether it's coming or going  shrugg

And who came up with tonight's cracker, What is it like to catch Coronavirus  think_smiley_46

We're neither of us TV watchers and at the moment it's not put on at all except as a screen to watch pre-recorded golden oldies.  Whenever we do this there seems yet another government minister or expert standing at a podium spreading gloom.  Even my favourite Radio 4 and Classic FM seem to have frequent updates about the number of dead and the extending length of time we might be in lockdown.

It doesn't seem to have occurred to those who schedule such thing that a lot of us would like a channel where there are no news broadcasts, the C word is not mentioned, no-one asks you to support the NHS and no-one tells you not to go out.   Escapist ? Why not ?  I fear for the mental health of those who listen obsessively to bad news each day and I don't want to be one of them.

Such channels do exist but unfortunately the content is 40% programmes and 60% Advert, Chris is a Steven Segal (in his younger days) fan and found one of his films on Paramount last night - soon I was complaining about the volume during the ads and she about the length of the same!!!

I wonder when one of those irritating journalists will ask the one sensible question that none of them has so far considered.

Why are we not being shown the number of deaths per head of population? (And similar for hospital admissions etc..)

Number of deaths means very little. If you compared the Isle of Wight to America, every single person could be dead on Wight, but the raw data would still suggest that America was infinitely worse off.

Conspiracy theory alert!!!  Is there a reason for not showing these figures? The scientists are well aware of the pitfalls if statistical interpretation of raw data is not rigorous.

Come to think of it, so is the government . . . but only so they can use it to their advantage!!  Whistle1 shrugg

The postman brought me a parcel yesterday.
When I opened it, it was a hat, and it said.
'grumpy old git' on the front, my son sent me it.
I was wondering, does wearing it give me any rights, such as being allowed to push to the front of a queue. Or shout at kids.?

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/weeklyprovisionalfiguresondeathsregisteredinenglandandwales

Download and analysis the spreadsheet, note particularly average deaths per week over the last 5 years and deaths when the underlying cause was respiratory disease rather than those where it was just mentioned on the certificate.
