Gas storage locker too small for 2 bottles
Just bought an 2006 Nuevo Autosleeper 2006 with one 7kg calor gas bottle in the locker . Tried to fit another one and it's too big. Got all the sizes and worked out that it was designed for 2 x 4.5 kg bottles which calor are slowly fading out Anybody had the same problem and how did you solve it? It will be much appreciated for any help or advise given. Regards, Gordon

Re: Gas storage locker too small for 2 bottles
Have you tried 1x7kg +1x4.5kg. I remember previous threads about this. 4.5kg sits on shelf?
Don't have the problem as I can fit 2x13kg in mine.

From memory, Peter is correct.
One big one, and a small one which acted as a reserve until the emptied big one could be exchanged. Can't recall the sizes, but two bottles definitely went in.

Our 2006 Nuevo came with 2x6kg propane and they seem to fit perfectly, maybe the gas locker is made to this size.

Propane and butane cylinders from Calor are available in different sizes and weights.

Butane is heavier than Propane.
4.5kg B is same bottle size as 3.9kg P
7.0kg B is same bottle size as 6.0kg P
15.0kg B is same bottle size as 13.0kg P (actually P is 3mm smaller dia)

My 2006 Nuevo had 2 6kg standard and later 2 Calorlites, no problems fitting them in.

Same here 2 x 6kg Calor just fits, and I mean just! But mine is the EK, maybe different on the OP's ES.

Re: Gas storage locker too small for 2 bottles
Thank you all for your help and advise. They must fit different size gas lockers. If I put a 6kg or a 7kg bottle in either side, then when I measure the gap between the door frame and the bottle I'm left with 240mm. A 6kg and 7kg bottle both measure 256 mm in diameter and a 4.5kg 3.9kg bottle measures 240mm in diameter. Therefor I need 2 small bottles or try and force a medium and small bottle into the compartment or try to alter the box by 16mm to get 2 x 6kg 7kg bottles in. I'd planned to remove the strap/half moons and reposission them in each corner to try and make up 16mm.
just to correct Plouglin as an ex engineer that worked with liquid/vapour gasses for 30 years butane and propane weigh the same butane expands into vapour at around 230 times it's liquid form and propane expands around 280 times it's liquid form hence that is why you only get 6kg in propane and 7kg in butane it' all about volume not weight. It's very dangerous stuff.

Gordon

Talking about liquid weight.
Liquid Density of Butane @70F = 36.05 lb/ft3
Liquid Density of Propane @70F = 31.12 lb/ft3 = 0.863 x density of Butane
4.5 kgx0.863 =3.9 kg
Liquid Density of Butane @70F = 36.05 lb/ft3

Re: Gas storage locker too small for 2 bottles
I used to do exactly what Gromit suggests, when I had a Clubman. To have maximum flexibility (and to increase chances of finding supplies when overseas) I used one Calor propane (the main bottle) and one (smaller) CampingGaz butane as the reserve. Had to carry 2 regulators, of course, but they're small.Gromit wrote:

Current Nuevo has refillable underslung tank. Huge advantage is that it needs no locker space, and is cheap. But stockists in UK are increasingly elusive. And has finite lifespan, with replacement tank being expensive. On balance, I'd prefer the locker.

Re: Gas storage locker too small for 2 bottles
A safefill bottle is an option but it depends if the OP is looking for more gas 'between stops/changeovers' in which case it wouldn't make any difference if there was a single refillable or a non-refillable UNLESS the OP were looking to tour abroad and there the small capacity of a single UK bottle would be a serious issue.
Again, depending on touring plans, perhaps an under slung refillable tank with a decent capacity would be worth the investment leaving the current locker as 'back up' with a UK 6/7kg bottle or even a small Repsol/Cepsa if touring Spain.
I have a 11kg Gaslow (local fill up point) which is fine for UK trips, and a second 11kg Repsol bottle for our Spanish meanderings.
All depends on usage, touring plans and, as you've found out, carrying capacity or the ability to top up. as mentioned, if touring just the UK then stick to Calor and fit the largest you can with a tiny 2nd bottle (even the hideously expensive Campingaz) which will tide you over until an exchange is possible, which should be at any campsite or other outlet.
Good luck.

That is strange. My 2007 Nuevo has 2x 6kg bottles which fit comfortably. Maybe the 7.5 kg is wider?

Hi Everyone
Where does Gordon get the idea that the 4.5kg gas bottles are being discontinued as the are a standard part of the Calor and Flogas range, there has been a shortage of some sizes of gas bottles due to the surge in new motorhome sales, infact Calor have been buying back gas bottles at £8 each
regards
Alan

Re: Gas storage locker too small for 2 bottles
Maybe worth a try.
When I had a 2006 Tribby had the same problem.
Does your locker have plastic gas cradle like this
I took them out and screwed the straps directly to the wall this surprisingly made enough room to sit two bottles side by side worth a try, best to use a very hot nail to make the screwholes in the strap. to stop the banging together I put a thin stiff plastic mat between them (old cardboard box would also do).

Re: Gas storage locker too small for 2 bottles
Just a silly thought - my van takes a 13kg propane plus a 6kg propane (or the butane equivalents). On one occasion I bought a 13kg refill and it WOULD NOT FIT. Previous 13kg's that I had bought had had a sheet steel.collar/shield around the tap - the one that did not fit was different, having a wrought steel ring supported on three bits of vertical ironwork. It was about 1cm too tall for the locker. I know the OP's problem is with the diameter but might he have a bottle that unusually is a bit bigger in diameter than standard?
