40p convenience
So you go to Whitby, support their economy ie
£3 for 2 hrs parking (no complaint)
About £12 in one or two gift shops ( no complaint)
£29.70 in fish and chip restaurant - very nice!
£18 in Spar shop to top up m/h supplies
Would have spent about a fiver on ice creams if sun had bee out!
Then find public conveniences on harbour front want 40p for a visit !! They even accept payment by card!!
Had a nice time though!

Re: 40p convenience
For me, especially as I get older, one of the great 'conveniences' (!) of having a motorhome is ready access to the loo.
Finding public loos is becoming harder and harder, particularly if you need to park nearby.
And as to the cost, don't get me started!
The good news is that railway stations managed by Network Rail, some of which previously charged up to 50p to spend a penny, are gradually dropping their charges, some since last week.
Top tip for anyone using St Andrews Square bus station in Edinburgh: save 30p by nipping into Harvey Nicks next door - the soap is nicer too.

Re: 40p convenience
I am alone in having a first officer not averse to using the loo whilst travelling? There is hope for Whitby, they introduced a 20p charge to use the loo in Falmouth but it was so unpopular the charge was scrapped after a short time.

Re: 40p convenience
Looking at it from Whitby council’s point of view I suspect this charge reflects what they need to cover their costs: cleaning, replacing units damaged by vandals, maintainence and so on.
Local councils are so cash-strapped these days that visitors to Whitby are lucky to have public loos at all, even at 40p a go. Many councils are closing them altogether.
No wonder you don’t hear the expression “ spending a penny “ any more.

Whitby one of the nicest places on the north east coast, cheap,it is not, it's unfortunate that councils are so cash strapped .
Come to Bridlington if you want cheap and cheerful , good beachs though.

If ever I get stuck in a long que it would be a godsend to be able to use my loo, nothing worse than being desperate and having to go on the side of the road. I would never let anyone else use it though.

Re: 40p convenience
All this at a time when council tax has gone up by much more than inflation.
I know ratepayers only pay a smallish proportion of the councils total spending, central government picking up the rest, but guess where central government gets it's money from..
Where exactly is all the money going?
Oh, I know, I've just read there are now a record number of council officers who are paid more than the prime minister..

20p in Monmouth but that was for the urinals only - but 4 of you could go in at once if you wanted as the door opened on 4 urinals. Never seen that before.

Re: 40p convenience
We have just had a couple of days away staying in Helmsley on Saterday night. Overnight parking free on Saterday. Sunday parking £1.50 all day because it was the Helmsley 10k run. The walled garden cost £5 instead of £7.50. The toilets in town are free.
Filey parking £7 for the day. Toilets are free on the sea front or at both the country park and the gardens at the other end of town.
When we were in Skegness last week a lady with small child needing to use the toilets found they have fitted barriers needing 20 pence or a credit card. Not having her purse on her I gave her 20 pence.
Using a card for 20 pence seems a bit excessive but the way things are these days.

Re: 40p convenience
Whilst waiting for a bus in Kelso (heading back to Melrose) last year, my wife decided to use the local facilities. By the time I'd found the neccesary 30p for her, another woman opened the door so she got in for free. I thought it only fair to "spend" the 30p so I used the gents. Although it's relatively modern, the whole place was an odd mottled green colour and the sinks looked like pizza ovens. When I put my hands under the tap they were hit with a squirt of soap and, when the water stopped, a hand drier burst into life
Problem with these smart facilities is they are smarter than me
