Auto Sleeper Wilton Empty Auto Sleeper Wilton

Post by chrisc58 Wed Jul 25, 2018 2:15 pm

Hi folks,

im looking at buying a Motorhome for some extensive touring around europe with the mrs and our dog. Ive been looking for a long while and rather than a "brand" ive basically decided id like the following:

4 berth
"U" or "L" shaped lounge
centre kitchen & seperate (non "wetroom" style) shower
budget of £30k but every bit saved is more money for the travels!

I settled on the Bessacarr e725 which ticketed all the boxes but I noticed the MTPLM was 3,850.  As I didnt pass my test before 1997 I dont have C1 on my licence and neither does my partner we decided to give it a miss, neither of us like the idea of doing the course and test!

after more searching I came across the Auto-sleeper Wilton which again seems to tick all the boxes, its the shape and layout that we both want, its slightly longer than is ideal but I think we can manage it, the only issue is various adverts advertise different MTPLM's and I cant seem to find any decisive info anywhere.

half of the adverts say the MTPLM is 3,500 (which would be fine on our licences) the other half show 3,800 which wouldnt for the above reasons.

can anyone shed any light?  we're looking at 2009 models

A few thoughts ?

If you are spending a protracted amount of time touring be very careful about the payload the van offers, in your efforts to stay under 3500kgs you may well be compromised

Apart from the obvious restrictions in parking or if it wont fit on your drive I see length as no issue, bearing in mind your intentions I would go as big as possible. Many complain about not enough space, few about too much.

We have owned two Bessacarr vans an E425 and an E795 and they were both great and well made, since then the brand has been bought by Swift so not sure if they are the same or not.

Does the idea of the test really phase you so much if it means you get the best van to spend the next year in?

Cannot advise on the Wilton I am afraid.

Good luck whatever you decide

Thanks for the replies,

I think with regards to the tests its not that big of a deal but I just foresee it being a bit of a pain and we would both have to do it and pass which im again slightly nervous of, I imagine the mrs will pass and I wont or the other way around and it'll just be a bit of a never ending story. Theres also an element of paying for something which we dont really need.

Hopefully someone has a wilton or knows a bit more about it as I cant find anything one way or another.

Different sources tell different stories about the weight.

Why not give Autosleepers a call and ask them?

The Wilton is quite a rare model. I reported one stolen back in February so be careful.

Hi Paul,

I did see your post when I was searching the site, sorry to hear you had yours stolen.

It is indeed quite a rare model - was it a good van or would you recommend something else instead?

It wasn't mine, I just reported it here after seeing it on Facebook. Good luck with your search , just make sure numbers and log book match etc.

The one to tell you about Wilton’s is Peter

I liked my Mk 7 Transit both to drive and reliability.  This Peugeot has spent more time in Pug dealers in 2 years than my Mk7 Tranny did in 8 years.
